The Lives Of Others, by fool4faile on Jun 7, 2008 19:11:22 GMT 1, i just recognized this thread, it's not a very current issue, but in december i was having the chance to watch this movie as the CUBAN PREMIERE in the havana film festival, and this was really an extra- special experience to see how the cubans (= the last people living in a socialist society assimilable to the eastern german society that is portrayed in this movie, especially with all that secret spying being a fundamental part of keeping the system going) reacted to it- very intense!

The Lives Of Others, by fool4faile on Jun 8, 2008 8:44:20 GMT 1, as i've been asked to explain HOW the reaction was, i am adding a bit more detailed description: the cubans were atypically quiet throughout the screening (usually they talk a lot and even eating, drinking and smoking in the cinema is, if not common, at least not avenged), some whispering from time to time and a very concentrated, tense atmosphere. some people were crying at the end. it was not so sure if they would be allowed to show it at all because it just has TOO MANY OBVIOUS PARALLELS TO CUBAN EVERYDAY LIVE (to the disapproval of the cuban party, because it is very clear in the movie that this system will not work very much longer and the opening of the berlin wall is near)- and that's exactly what the cubans also felt, they were very moved and touched, they even kept on whispering while getting to the exit- if you've ever been to a latin american country, you will know that this MEANS SOMETHING!
