Photography / Photographers!, by docmax on Sept 20, 2008 1:41:25 GMT 1, Wow... those are gut renching and beautiful in the same breath.
I think press photography is amazing. There is nothing like it that so esqusitely depicts life at its most brutal and honest.
Please check out www.worldpressphoto.org/ if you are interested. But please be warned some images can be distressing!
My favorites...
Georges Merillon Nogovac, Kosovo, Yugoslavia, 28 January 1990. Mourners at the deathbed of Elshani Nashim (27), who was killed during a protest against Yugoslavia's decision to abolish the autonomy of Kosovo.
Mike Wells Karamoja district, Uganda, April 1980. Starving boy and a missionary.
Hanns-Jรถrg Anders Londonderry, Northern Ireland, May 1969. A young Catholic during clash with British troops.

Photography / Photographers!, by docmax on Sept 20, 2008 2:13:22 GMT 1, Also check out www.thepressphotographersyear.com they had a exhibition last month in southbank.
Its an awards board that supports independent photojournalism, a really admirable thing to do as photojournalism is dying out fast. We need these guys to be out there showing us what is happening at the peripheries of humanity, instead of paparazzi photographs of the next nobody celebrity.

Photography / Photographers!, by jp on Sept 20, 2008 10:52:40 GMT 1, After loads of talk about a photographic thread! Here is one. Post your favorite photos, info or links on great photographers or sites etc. Ill start of with my all time favorite, James Nachtwey: www.jamesnachtwey.com/Need I say more?
Great thread! I collect both photography and photo books, so am glad to see a thread like this here. I have the book by Nachtwey called "Inferno" that has all of these photos and the book itself is a huge, heavy, beautiful tomb that really conveys the power and gravity of these images.
There are many many great photographers that you could post images from in this thread. I really like the work of Henri Cartier Bresson and Josef Koudelka in the street/press photo category.
I'm not really into entomology type photography, but today I was looking at some photos of butterflies that I thought were fantastic. From a photographer named Jo Whaley:

A very good friend works in Iraq as private security, he often sends me images. Some perhaps a bit graphic for the forum, this one is less so. He says these sand storms occur often, and insurgents use these as cover to attack the base

Politics seems futile and irrelevant but is probably the only effective solution. Let's keep this thread going for all types of photography, simply stunning.

Photography / Photographers!, by curiousgeorge on Sept 20, 2008 13:06:27 GMT 1, For me, sometimes i see deep things in the most subtle of images
In this first image, very nearly the whole country could feel the pain of the poor lost child, and perhaps wanted to reach out to him
The 2nd image the lost child has come full circle, and gone from a boy to a man
I know some might not say pictures of royalty suffering are not worthy in the face of what else goes on around the world.Point being money protects no-one from pain.
This is one of many thousands of images etched onto my memory forever

One of, if not my ultimate favourites tho, has to be Hiroshi Sugimoto, i find his stuff just so breathtaking, but i konw its not to everyones taste, particularly love his seascapes.

Google some of them for images - great stuff. Go for it.
