i mac, by Strange Al on Sept 2, 2007 11:46:44 GMT 1, I have had a 24" IMac for a few months now, and I would highly recommend it ;D Plus its just gone down in price, and its now made of glass and Aluminum But I think I prefer the white plastic job maself
Obviously the new Imac is another step forward technically and you can't complain about the slimmer chassis, but I also prefer the styling of the white Imacs.

i mac, by Ron Goldsurfer on Sept 2, 2007 14:01:56 GMT 1, I have a white 20" iMac and are very satisfied with it. I have a friend that recently bought the new version, the 20" in aluminum. I would have loved to update to the bigger model if it not was for the screen. Now the screen is very reflective and I am not sure that is so good to work with images on. A really dark picture makes the screen into a mirror and it can be difficult to work on details when you see your own face and background reflecting. But otherwise I think the new iMacs are stunning!

i mac, by corblimeylimey on Sept 2, 2007 16:03:54 GMT 1, I too am a mac user (G5) you're doing the right thing by going for the largest screen, very useful for design work, as has been said before go to Crucial for your memory (I've put 5Gb RAM in mine from there) although I've no idea how easy it is to replace hard drives and memory in an iMac but it's very easy in a G5 or Mac Pro.
I'd hold off buying one until October if you can, Apple is releasing it's latest version of the operating system then (10.5) which will cost around ยฃ100 to upgrade to if you get a mac now with 10.4 (sorry thwaites)

It appears my ibook has a faulty logic board and can be fixed by putting a bit of padding inside. genious??
Now my mind set on a new imac so if my missus askes my old computers still knackerd, ok?

i mac, by themightyreds on Sept 2, 2007 22:27:23 GMT 1, Best idea is to always try a few stores for latest quotes. Either way a 24" iMac is a sweet machine. Do like a few people have said and go to crucial for extra RAM as its a doddle to fit it yourself and you'll save loads. Hard drive is not so hard to replace but might as well spec it with the size you need from the start - think you can get up to 1TB in there now but i'd go for 500GB and a second external FireWire 800 HD as a back-up drive.

the current OS is Tiger. the next one is Leopard. the Oct date is.....most likely optimistic.
as for running your CAD program (or any other windows specific SW), you can run Boot Camp and actually choose to boot up with Mac OS or Windows OS.

i mac, by slinkink on Sept 3, 2007 14:55:41 GMT 1, if anyone is gagging for a mac and an't 'quite' afford it then check out the refurb section on their website... on the shop page... you can get up to 35/40% off original prices and they all come diret from apple with a 12 month warranty. this applies to pretty much all the apple stores i have checked... uk/us/french at least. only thing you cant do is cto (configure to order) what they have is what you get but i have bought lots of macs in this way. i've used apple machines since 1994 and i've bought 6 mac pros, 2 mac books and 2 macbook pros so far this year so know a little about macs. incidentally you can also get refurb ipods from that section. refurb generally means that they were DOA (dead on arrival or developed a fault within 14 days so were exchanged not repaired) and fixed by apple. also they have 'outdated' products. ie when the new ipods come out in the next couple of days you 'might' see the old ones on there cheap....

i agree with everyone who said get memory from a 3rd party though... apple quotes ยฃ450 for the 4Gb RAM for mac book pros and crucial do it for as little as ยฃ120!!!! that almost an ian francis from BLKMKT or banksy signed from POW difference!!!!! (although i admit slightly easier to order and receive than either of those!)

I'll be upgrading my system software before the year is out, it looks really good, quite a step up IMO bear in mind it'll cost around ยฃ100 to upgrade but would be included with macs bought after it's release.

i'll be upgrading to leopard when it's here. even though i only just got this.
was going to go for the 24", but they were out of stock and i'm impatient so I bought the last 20" in the store. perfect size in the end. I've always had 15" monitors, so the improvement is immense.
if you're getting one pay the extra for a wireless mouse!
