Faile original SOLD, by edcase on Jan 7, 2010 2:19:53 GMT 1, Okay, due to a massive change in personal circumstances pre-xmas, plus in part because I scored a SOLIB a few months back, I'm selling a piece I always swore was a 'keeper'. (The SOLIB is a sure fire keeper!!!)
This is an original Macbeth / Mirror Mirror painted onto a key foods poster - you can just about make out the 'New York is our bag!' at the top.
There were a small number of different originals of this image made, most of which were used for the street but a couple were sold at their show in DC in 2006, although I believe were painted in 2005. I have provenance to that effect direct from Patrick from Faile. Don't confuse this with the numbered, editioned print of 250.
The only other one of these pieces I have ever seen on sale was at Bonhams in Oct 2008 which had an estimate of £6-8k and got brought in I believe just shy of the £6k.
I had the piece expertly framed by Mr. Frameman in a UV perspex box, and it has been on the wall ever since so is immaculate.
What is particularly interesting about this piece and what I believe will make it significant in the future is that unlike all of their other works it is not signed with the typical '1986' moniker. Instead, if you look carefully, in huge pencil letters it has 'Baghdad Bombs Kill' scrawled across it as protest against the ongoing war effort in Iraq at the time.
You really need to see it in person to see all of the hand finishing, including tons of wax!
It weighs a ton (I'd guess 30-35kg) so we'd need to discuss delivery or otherwise collection from south London.
The dimensions are 39/49in framed, 35/44in unframed.
I will ship globally, either framed or unframed.
I would consider part trades, but the point of selling this piece is that I could use the cash, so cash would need to make up a significant part of the deal.
I'm looking for £4k GBP, which in light of the most recent primary release prices and the forthcoming Gagosian show, as well as some recent secondary market deals I know of in the last 6 weeks I believe is a good price and a solid future investment (for those of you who buy art for that reason.)
Feel free to PM me on anything.
cheers Ed

Faile original SOLD, by Guest on Jan 7, 2010 3:25:01 GMT 1, wow, that is stunning Ed, rare as hens teeth is a term that springs to mind, works on keyfood posters rarely come up for sale on the secondary market, most are in collections and are not going to leave, shame you need to sell, but good luck with it, i cant see this hanging around for long.

Faile original SOLD, by edcase on Jan 8, 2010 0:42:19 GMT 1, Thanks. ALSO the original screen for this piece broke and I believe was destroyed after the print edition they did, so it's unlikely we will ever see more of this image.

Spot on! a quality bit of framing like that adds so much to a piece The perspex sort of adds a bit of shine and depth to it.

Faile original SOLD, by edcase on Jan 17, 2010 0:27:02 GMT 1, This piece is sold. Very surprised at the comparative lack of interest in this piece. Admittedly I haven't listed it anywhere else, but I do think people will regret not picking up this piece come the 2nd half of this year. I certainly regret having to sell it.

I suppose it was just a question of time. 'Marmite' image but a great piece for Faile collector nevertheless. I agree that some people might regret it in a few months time however, as one can see from the posted comments there's not much money lying around these days. Another thing. This shows (IMO) that people think very, very hard before parting with such amount of money even when such a name as Faile is involved. 2 years ago this would have been snapped very quickly and probably just because of the name and not because of the image itself. Which I hope is not the case in this instance.

Faile original SOLD, by edcase on Jan 18, 2010 10:02:39 GMT 1, Thanks for the comments guys. Rest assured it's going to someone building a significant long-term collection.
re: framing, it's float-mounted onto a backing board which is attached to a wooden frame, which itself is attached to the rear of the perspex frame. Done by Mr Frameman. The piece looks like an ancient museum artifact and I thought the clear, clean perspex box would make it look 'preserved'
cheers ed
