Damien Hirst Butterfly windows scandal!, by BK83 on Feb 25, 2007 21:48:46 GMT 1, Anyone been following the scandal surrounding Hirst's new show at the Gagosian in LA and London?
Apparently Hirst opened his show in LA friday night to the tune of $55M -- yes thats right -- A host of celebs showed up as you would expect on Oscar weekend (smart little marketing ploy) and the show sold out, but some critics were a bit disturbed that Hirst's new butterfly stained glass windows were very similiar if in fact not exactly the same as that of LA artists Lori Precious who has been incorporating this technique into her art for the last 14 years.
on the left is Lori Precious' work and on the right is Damien Hirst's work from the new show....very interesting indeed!

Damien Hirst Butterfly windows scandal!, by BK83 on Feb 26, 2007 0:12:17 GMT 1, well yeh, obviously they dont look the same but its more about the concept -- stained glass windows comprised of butterfly wings.
in any event, it doesn't really matter if he stole the idea or not -- art is about influence and inspiration from others.

Damien Hirst Butterfly windows scandal!, by tadghostal on Feb 26, 2007 9:35:41 GMT 1, Hirst is a first class loser, and it seems to me that only elitist art gallery wankers and boring rich people who have no soul claim to find his work appealing (while I suspect that after years of saying whatever is expedient, it is doubtful they have an opinion of their own any longer). The visual compositions of Hirsts latest show was mildly interesting at best, and excruciatingly dull at worst. Plus, its undeniable that the guy is a complete hack, wholly lacking in originality.
With so much genuinely great art out there, how the hell does a giant dildo like this guy end up so popular? The kind of thinking that leads to believing Hirst is a great artist is the exact kind of vacant logic that leads into expeditions in the middle east--different ideological groups perhaps, but the same vacant logic.
Bring on the negs!

You know, I think I read a Noam Chomsky book arguing this exact same thing.

Damien Hirst Butterfly windows scandal!, by pezlow on Feb 26, 2007 11:48:07 GMT 1, Tad - I am neither a gallery owner nor a rich wanker but I find Damien Hirst's work absolutely fascinating. You had to see the Physical Impossibility of Death in the mind of someone living to really appreciate what an incredible installation it is. Not all of Hirst's installations work but in my mind he really pushes the boundaries of contemporary art, he makes you laugh, he makes you think and he provokes debate. And if he makes a few quid in the process then good luck to him.

Damien Hirst Butterfly windows scandal!, by saltandiron on Feb 26, 2007 12:05:54 GMT 1, Totally agree about Physical Impossibility........ You really have to see it in the flesh to appreciate it. Also I know that Hirst's stuff ahs provoked some of the strongest reactions to art that I've ever seen (an ex freaked out in his recreation of a pharmacy that used to be in tate modern). Personally I think he's done some stuff that's fanscinating.

Everyones a critic , ironic that most critics (you included) through their writing, more often than not, simply highlight their own ignorance by attempting to shine a light on their own intellectual prowess. ;D
No Hirst = No way in for Banksy

Thats modern art for you, wish I was as much a loser as him then I wouldnt have to worry about buying prints I could buy originals, Oh he does, Hirst does so much for emerging artists and as Nu stated, Hirst invested In Banksy early on by purchasing a canvas (a way of lending money) which gave him the Openings he deserved.

But before we go any further I will accept you do not see that as art and we can move on.

Do you think Banksy paints his works on the streets on his own? If so you are wrong, as for Sattch, your right he is not an artist but a collector, Hirst is both

lots of artists work that way. some haven't even got a studio, they just draw up plans and lets some metal shop handle the rest.

Good point ABC, but I'd take it much much further. I was on foundation with Hirst back in the day.. and to be honest, it was probably the last generation that purely went to art school to make work with no idea what the hell they were gonna do after they graduated. Before Hirst and the Goldsmiths school, it was pretty much unheard of that a young artist could "make it".. you were looking at 30-40 year careers or hoping to be discovered by cork street before you died.
Along comes Hirst and co, kicks the doors of a massive warehouse in the docklands down, and stages a massive PR coup with his Freeze show. The hype was unheard of in contemporary art. Dealers and curators from around the world flew in and suddenly contemporary art was cool, up there with raves and warehouse parties. The next generation of art students were very different, schooled on id magazine and The Face, club culture and urban DIY ethics .. a massive shift when graphic and design students realised that fine art could now be up there as a career choice, and yes, a whole generation of younger people were brought into appreciating art like never before.
Hirst, Emin, Sarah Lucas, Gavin Turk, Marc Quinn, Wilson Sisters, Chapman bros, carl Frredman and curator Joshua Compton all pretty much created the Hoxton/Shoreditch scene as we know it today, pre gentrification times.
Almost identical to the Banksy phenomenon and all in the late 80's early 90's.
Again.. my point, No Hirst = No Banksy.. well, not as we know it. Doubtful severn shed and turf war and the like would have happened had not Hirst and Freeze laid the groundwork and template ten years before.
Phew !

No, but I tell you what does.. 7 years at University studying under some of the greatest professors of fine art on the face of the earth at one of the worlds best Universities.. and by studying and being exposed to art 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 30 years, living, breathing, walking and talking it. Subsequently becoming one of the worlds most respected fine artists, as judged by his peers, collectors, historians and critics. As opposed to people who work in an hospital. (no disrespect intended)
