A New Banksy - LA, by thx1138 on Feb 18, 2008 21:20:23 GMT 1, OK so just to clarify for MELFEASANCE and to all on this forum, the majority of Nick Walkers pieces from the Los Angeles show sold to local guys from Los Angeles and NOT to European buyers. I was at the show and I personally know many of the madmen who jumped all over Nicks stuff within the first few hours....smart guys indeed. anyone with half a brain and some decent cash realized that what they were looking at were historical pieces of art. I will agree that for the most part the US is snoozing when it comes to the current onslaught of fantastic art...however Los Angeles represented to the fullest that night and showed Nick Walker the love and appreciation he rightly deserves.

A New Banksy - LA, by Rude Copper on Feb 19, 2008 15:48:27 GMT 1, love his new work, its almost weird how he's the only one who does this (instantly recognisable)style, & gets it right everytime. still of the opinion his streetwork just gets better & better, but the prints have taken a dive.

Hey Mel, no worries, just a case of misinformation.
[snip]
I can 100% say that we sold 60 original pieces and of those 60 only 16 sold outside the US. Pretty amazing actually. Also with only one exception the US buyers bought all of the highest end pieces. UK buyers mostly bought smaller canvases. Of the top 20 pieces only 2 sold to the UK, both to the same collector. The show was put up in one week, we took a large group show down the Saturday before Nick's show and prepped the space for a few days, didn't start hanging until the Wednesday before the opening. Feel free to share this info as I feel it really shows the growing global nature of the demand for Nick's work.

Respect to that. Very true -- the US is really snozing right now with regards to contemporary post-graffiti art. I was hanging out with a good friend of mine (and also super famous artist!) Tomokazu Matsuyama on Sunday at eachother's studio and we were talking about how the US is just so behind on this market right now. with respect of course to some of the bigger collectors -- but for the most part, at the commerical level it's just not even on par with how it is in the UK.
