Bristol street art - 2003 style - old banksys, by jakek on Jul 20, 2008 18:20:04 GMT 1, Well i'd been planning of doing this for ages and rather than finish off a report for work i've dug out and uploaded a few photos i took a few years back in Bristol when i was living there. Not the best photos in the world and some of the work looks a little worn away, and some are what was left of the work after it had been cleaned, but i thought you guys might like to see them. (there are quiet a few photos so i'll upload them in a few batches).
on the side of WHSmiths in clifton
at the bottom of park street - this was removed but more recently banksy has painted the main hanging from the windowsill on this wall
and this one was just round the corner from there

Bristol street art - 2003 style - old banksys, by Deleted on Jul 20, 2008 19:05:25 GMT 1, i went and had a look a few banksys this last week and was sad to see the the 'heavy weaponary' on the side of herberts bakery in montpellier has faded badly over the last year and is barely visable. it wont be visable at all this time next year. get there quickly if you wont to see whats left. on the positive still a nice old un in the car park of my gp surgery, montpellier health cente 'take the money and run'.

which might have been on a canvas at the severnshed show (something like the escape of the badly drawn boy) and was on this side of the police station
opposite the army barracks (?) on whiteladies, someone had deemed the queen victoria too offensive.

there were also some great ones on some chipboard on an old tattoo shop - even back then i was tempted to be a little cheeky and nab them. wish i had.
this was a flyer for a wall of sound night in london
and this is the bit that brings a tear to my eye...
i paid my way through the final year at uni selling these, buying them from the greenleaf bookshop for ยฃ35(?) sticking them in a cheap ikea frame and selling them on for a hundred or so. god knows how many i sold and what they'd have been worth now, gutted i didn't hold on to any. there were always those 2, the rude copper and the 3 longer prints (have a nice day, weston super mare, and bomb middle england) but as a poor student i only bothered trading the cheap ones. hindsight hey?
although i do have this which is just as cool to me, just not quite as valuable - a cool little will barras drawing on the back of an alterior receipt! (it was a ticket for a night that alterior put on for proked trainers - they had some awesome stuff in the show - barras, dalek and i can't remember who else)
great little place alterior - i had my photos (not these ones, some stuff from my time in japan) on show there just before it shut.

Gotta scan my photos of these from back in 2000 or so someday, got to them all before they got cleaned off or tagged over mostly. Been sent some more for the blog that i must get round to putting up sometime soon too.
The one on the side of the police station above was part of the 'avon and somerset constabulary' image, either number one or number two. An earlier version of the partner image to it sold at bonhams a while back i think, was on blue canvas from the alterior show. The severnshed show had them on red canvasses. Well its kind of you to ask, but in all honesty it was just a bit of daubing with a paint brush and a tin of white dulux emulsion. That said it was PROPER graffiti. Mindless vandalism with absolutely no artistic merit whatsoever....not like this current lot....way too much thought going into it nowadays....

The times they are a fading...  The Playing it Safe tag and ant on the side of La Tasca are still surprisingly bold - I like taking people on a surprise Banksy tour!

I remember thinking at the time it was pretty cool. I don't think it lasted all that long though. I am pretty sure I saw it near the public toilets under the arches at the top of Stokes Croft... it's on the 70 bus route. I was wondering if that was a Banksy? I really wish I'd taken pics back then. I used to walk past his free hand piece on the Welshback most days when I lived in halls as a student.
