Micallef 'Dreamer' on Laz, by angel41 on Jun 13, 2008 8:33:33 GMT 1, Love Micallef and like that piece but it's not a 50 granda. Probably only took an hour. Apt title.

Micallef 'Dreamer' on Laz, by Rude Copper on Jun 13, 2008 9:19:47 GMT 1, i don't think anyone questions micallef's quality as an artist, his work is excellent, his 1st showing at lazarides is still one of my favourites, its just the prices, why should this work be 50k?, is it an effort to re-establish himself in the market?, its ok to draw comparison with previous prices, as long as the full picture is presented, 2005 the orignal of 21st century love was sold at the ghetto for 8k, the year after the orig of bomber girl was 9k odd, & the year after that ,dopey osbourne paid 100k for the minatour piece, slight anomaly, donchathink?, justifying neate & parla is easy, supply & demand, micallef's not so easy, as i dont think the demand has returned.....yet,

Micallef 'Dreamer' on Laz, by Bram on Jun 13, 2008 9:48:23 GMT 1, fair point RC and I hate comparing artist but when you look at some of the Nick Walker prices of the (top end) originals and Micallef then it doesn't look that bad. I agree that it is steep. I believe you would need to be a serious Micallef collector to get stuck into this one. I also think there will be better ones to come (maybe cheaper)

Micallef 'Dreamer' on Laz, by crazyarsemother on Jun 13, 2008 11:23:44 GMT 1, The sun rises, Micallef is a genius the sun falls.
I must say though that I am really dissappointed with the statues. They look naf. I don't know either of them but I sometimes think that Laz is not good for Micallef from an artistic point of view. I feel his work has its own integrity and does not need to be put through the same Laz methodology in terms of his contextual approach and methods. Their is something really tiring about the 3d work that is produced by Banksy, Micallef etc. It lacks any real depth.
IMO His paintings are worth what someone is prepared to pay for them and I wish him all the best because they are an absolute joy.

Micallef 'Dreamer' on Laz, by user on Jun 13, 2008 11:49:36 GMT 1, To be fair though the recent Laz shows have lacked any bulls**t, Kinsey, Harrington etc... so it's quite possible that we've seen the end of any sort of tacky selling strategies or hype. I hope so.

If you actually read my posts I am talking about how Micallef is dealt with as an artist by his representation not his actual paintings. Some of the Neates at his recent show were inferior to this piece imo at a not too dissimilar price but no one complained about those prices and I think that has a lot to do with how Micallef has been handled by Laz.

Micallef 'Dreamer' on Laz, by Bram on Jun 13, 2008 12:06:25 GMT 1, It is interesting how some artists are gravitating towards Laz considering some of the negatives. There doesn't seem to be too many leaving the stable neither.

Micallef 'Dreamer' on Laz, by user on Jun 13, 2008 12:14:21 GMT 1, Those that are going with Laz as of late are all pretty new to the art gallery world; Francis, JR, Tripp whereas Elms deal with artists who have been exhibiting for years. I have nothing against Laz but it sounds to me like you don't want to hear anything bad said about his gallery and their dealings. In my mind Laz messed up big time with one of my all time favourite artists last year, Micallef, and despite what people say about the work from the LA show having sold, how Laz handled him at that time was a joke and it knocked my confidence with regards to his gallery. Lately things have been handled much better and that, like I said, is how I hope it will continue.

which Neates did you see as inferior? IMO I feel the 50K Micallef looks inferior to Neateยดs cheaper spraycan portaits on paper.

User - you are preaching to the converted. I'll be the first one to voice how badly AM was handled, certainly with the over exposer and the print releases. My point is that the quality of the stuff he is doing has not been affected. In fact in a weird way I think it has probably given him a bit more drive.
I think we agree that Elms is more experienced at handling it's artists - I think Neate would still be amazing no matter who was handling him and the same for AM.

Micallef 'Dreamer' on Laz, by user on Jun 13, 2008 12:43:10 GMT 1, The likes of the Neate coffee drinker I found a bit uninspiring and almost slightly tacky but that's just my own personal taste as I tend to favour darker worker I suppose. As for the Micallef looking inferior to the Neate cheaper portraits, if you mean the Neates on white paper then we simply have different tastes as in the flesh the Micallef is much, much better imo. Incidentally I like both artist's work but that is not to say that I like everything they do.
Bram, I didn't mean to sound like I was having a go at you, I suppose I am just venting some frustration at Laz's past dealings as I think it would be tragic if an artist like Micallef continued to suffer in terms of his integrity as perceived by others as a consequnce of a bad year last year.

Micallef 'Dreamer' on Laz, by user on Jun 13, 2008 13:13:28 GMT 1, Agreed. I love the fact that he is drawing on his experiences of his time spent in Palestine for his work, should make for seriously powerful images. Added to the fact that he mentioned something about just 6 canvasses should make for an interesting and hopefully breath taking show.

Too often on here you have idiots slagging off Micallef based on Ebay prices or a print they had a bad time queuing up for. The man has a great talent, like Neate. And as far as artists staying with Laz despite the negativity, that negativity probably doesn't go further than this forum, so I don't think Laz has anything to worry about.

Micallef 'Dreamer' on Laz, by onemandown72 on Jun 13, 2008 16:41:51 GMT 1, With regards pricing from what I understand this is done by the artist in conjunction with the gallery. I am in no way privvy to the pricing of this piece, but I would be amazed if AM had had no input into the price & the thought processess behind this. It's also priced at a level where it's target market are collectors who can more than afford to buy this, and the pricing for them is secondary to the work that they are buying

Micallef 'Dreamer' on Laz, by achtungbono on Jun 14, 2008 12:03:33 GMT 1, f*uckn' joke of a price. Talented but what kind of credentials does he have to warrant anything close to this price? Hes associated w/Banksy wooo hooo! Now watch Laz put it in the basement and put a "sold" next to it and everybody will be shouting Micallef sold for ยฃ50k! Then some weak a ss micallef "originals" will pop up on ebay... Bobby you're pretty new to all this I take it? It's just that you sound like a bit of an idiot when you make such fly-by comments like that. Micallef has proven his talent over an 8 year period and is respected within this street art bulls**t world and also within the established fine art world. If you had any idea as to what it meant to have work shown by the Royal Academy, have work shown in the Tate, have been selected to provide a print for a Tate show on comptemporary art, have come 2nd in the BP National Portrait etc... you might not make such pathetic arguments. You'll probably offer some really intelligent coma back like "all of that means jack s**t" which will just go to further highlight your ignorance and apparent lack of knowledge when it comes to Micallef. Regardless of what I or you think about any of the above the fact of the matter is that Micallef has more credentials within the art world than pretty much any other artist on here apart from banksy. Just because he is not flavour of the month you and others slate him as though he is a flash in the pan joke but show me where all the micallef secondary Micallef originals are? The fact of the matter is that a large fan base of Micallef fans own a shed load of his work, the majority of which was bought before things went mad with Laz (he had been going for over 6 years prior to that) but you don't see them coming up on auction every other month - Neate, banksy, Faile etc... because his buyers weren't bell ends like the majority of idiots who visit here and shock, horror they didn't buyt to make a quick buck, they bought because the guy has serious talent. Do I think 50k is too expensive for this piece on Laz's site? I;m not sure but your kind of comments are so daft and - it sounds like you base an artist's talents and credentials on the ebay market and these forums which is beyond ridiculous and quite unbelievable. Do you even have any idea what well known collectors were buying Micallef before he went to Laz? I doubt you'll care but you really should learn a bit more about the artists that you discuss in such a forceful manner otherwise you end up sounding like an idiot. If you have a problem with Laz that should have nothing to do with Micallef himself as an artist. If you don't like his art fair enough but to question his credentials in the manner that you did is pretty pathetic.
Bobby, I think your comment was supposed to been off the cuff and tongu in cheek & I get that.
Type. Since when did the established art world actually mean anything, apart form hyping the price and serving their own little cartel and a bit of mutual back slappery? ( not a personal attack BTW )
critics and those who "advise" moneyed collectors can speak for hours, yet still have nothing original to say- why is their opinion more valued than yours or the bloke down at the pub ?
I think its crap, but thats my opinion and ( to me ) its the only opinion that matters

My only gripe is seeing the little Banksy Horse Gaurd again. I was at Santas Ghetto 06 when it was sold. Missed out by moments, was being mucked around by some sales boy who new nothing whilst someone else was giving there card details to Dora.
