Christie's contemporary London evening sale, by lee3 on Oct 19, 2008 15:50:43 GMT 1, This kicks off in about 30 minutes and is undoubtedly the strongest sale of the week with them looking for around ยฃ50m on the low end. Pdp had a pretty rough go of things yesterday and that is what happens to the smaller houses with lesser works in times like this. I will be surprised if Christie's doesn't hit their low target as there are some real gems in this sale. It will be interesting to see whether the Prince nurse painting can keep that kind of price tag and whether the large Richter finds a buyer. I love the Freud's as well as the Warhol double Marilyn and I have a slight preference (mostly because of pulls) for the marilyn reversal 9 times not that i could afford any of them. It's still fun to day dream. This one continuously updates just like Sotheby's the other night.
Here is the catalog

And the results will show up here once things kick off:

No urban art of this generation offered in this sale though there is a knock out green Basquiat, Desmond, for sale that should take out its high estimate with ease.

Christie's contemporary London evening sale, by loucastel on Oct 19, 2008 16:01:06 GMT 1, Some superb works in this auction, totally different world to the one we inhabit on here, have to agree, Lee, the Basquiat is superb, this is all top end art, hope the Bacon, "Portrait of Henrietta Moraes" does well, the guy just keeps going from strength to strength, what would he think if he were still alive?

Christie's contemporary London evening sale, by lee3 on Oct 19, 2008 17:08:55 GMT 1, 26 of 47 lots found buyers for 32m, not so good. The Hirst sale was clearly the top. a set of Mao prints went for half of what they went for 6 months ago. Lot's of beautiful work was passed over and like every other market in the world at the moment, the buyer as opposed to the seller is king again. Expectations must be lowered though the problem for many is that debts can not be.

Very true Lee3. I think many people looking to sell in the foreseeable future will have quite firm ideas of what their prints/pieces are worth and although they might have reached those expectations last year I doubt they will now.

Christie's contemporary London evening sale, by Simococo on Oct 19, 2008 18:06:29 GMT 1, I am bidding full throttle. I have parted company with a lot of my original collection and now I am heading for the hot stuff that will adorn my walls for years to come from generation to generation. Or till my children or grandchildren look at it and say "what the f$ck was the old bastard thinking!?"

Christie's contemporary London evening sale, by aginghippie on Oct 19, 2008 18:28:19 GMT 1, There has been a shortage of good pieces at the mid to high end because while prices rose people hung onto art. With these results some people will decide that now is the time to sell. I think it will take a couple more mediocre auction results before there is serious movement but if you have the cash things just got interesting.

Christie's contemporary London evening sale, by lee3 on Oct 19, 2008 18:34:02 GMT 1, It will be interesting to see if the Sotheby's (tomorrow) and Christie's (Tuesday) morning sales which have a lot more work in many people's price ranges have similar 60% sale rates. After taking a closer look, many of the lower priced works in both evening sales found buyers whereas a large number of the BIG price tag works failed to hammer. I'm not certain what to make of that but found it an interesting observation nonetheless.
