Hirst at Sotheby's (Sotheby's Private View), by Deleted on Aug 2, 2008 11:55:45 GMT 1, Thanks.I like some but dont understand most of it sorry, i know im an art heathen but i cant understand how any dead animal in a glass tank is worth looking at?. Having said that i did very recently go to an Art preview and spent a couple of minutes looking at two small air conditioning units thinking they were an exhibit until i realised and moved slowly away Homer Simpson like. It looks sort of impressive when i have seen it at somewhere like Phillips de Pury though i must admit.

Modern art is not easy I know, i struggle sometimes. I have got an open mind to all things and always have, also i like both contemporary and more trad. things including art although lean more towards contemporary, its just my view on this particular matter thats all. I like what i like but i am always willing to be educated in all things and learning something new is always fun. Dead animals in tanks i dont understand though im afraid.

Hirst at Sotheby's (Sotheby's Private View), by mose on Aug 2, 2008 14:45:59 GMT 1, Modern art is not easy
not being rude/silly/whatever, but I think the proper term is contemporary.....
The sale looks like a Damien Hirst remastered 'Best Of' collection. Something for every one, at many different price levels. Have the feeling this will be a big indicator of the health/wealth of the contemporary marketplace.
In my dreams, I win 'After the Flood' and 'The Dream' and bring them home to sit next to 'St. Sebastian, Exquisite Pain' that I would have purchased from its current owner.

Hirst at Sotheby's (Sotheby's Private View), by lee3 on Aug 4, 2008 2:36:30 GMT 1, >>>have the feeling this will be a big indicator of the health/wealth of the contemporary marketplace.<<<
I'm not so sure. I just can't appreciate why any blue chip dealer would support this sale and they are usually a big component of the art buying market. It's counter to their long term business model yet Christie's and Sotheby's have more to gain potentially long term from this than anyone else including Hirst himself. So, while I expect this sale to be a smashing success because of the cynic in me, I wouldn't use it as any kind of barometer for the art market as a whole. Rather, I look at it as a HUGE opportunity for the auction houses to paint the tape in the hopes that they can lure other artists of Hirst's pricing caliber to follow in his footsteps.

I think that's the point with that piece - a real life representation of a well known/clichรฉd image.
It was on display at the White Cube for his show last year. I really, really like it - though not enough to have in my lounge. ;-)

Hirst at Sotheby's (Sotheby's Private View), by Neate Michael on Aug 4, 2008 12:21:27 GMT 1, Seems a bit odd that the auction is in London, yet the exhibition is in New York. Do they presume if you are rich enough to bid, a flight to NYC will be no bother?

The exhibition itself is in London for the 10 days prior to the evening sale. The large auction houses will often preview certain lots/highlights in other large cities (NY, LA, Paris, Amsterdam) for clients and to generate a buzz but the exhibition itself is always in the city of the sale.
