Really? I never bought in an auction but I thought the lower estimate was actually the opening bid? How does it works? I might go in the battle for one of the pieces ;D
Edit: stated in the "terms and conditions"
3. Estimates. Estimates are designed to help buyers gauge what sort of sum might be involved for the purchase of a particular lot. The lower estimate may represent the reserve price and certainly will not be below it. Estimates do not include the Buyerβs Premium or VAT (where chargeable). Estimates are prepared some time before the sale and may be altered by announcement before the sale. They are in no sense definitive.

Dreweatts Art Auctions π¬π§, by Brushstrokes 75 on Mar 26, 2011 17:45:25 GMT 1, Auctions usually start at 50% of the lower estimate (but it's not a rule).
Afterwards there can be a reserve price that should be at a price lower than the low side of the estimate.

Dreweatts Art Auctions π¬π§, by inkheads on Apr 4, 2011 9:57:40 GMT 1, okay 2 days to go to get yourself registered for bids! wednesday is auction day! defo have alot of interest in bidding on a few of the pieces. imo its a much improved and better dnfa auction than some of the previous.
the nick walker is a stunner. that jose parla is a 'wink wink' good looker. alot of older US artists give a stronger, broader appeal... likes of blade, futura, LA2. (those auction results are always high.) then all the way upto the Neate.. good quality pieces. (scattered in a usual odd few really shit things) After the Neate... i loose all interest.
But, the sun will be shining and its gonna be hot... let the pockets do the talking, and begin a spring season of silly buying!

Dreweatts Art Auctions π¬π§, by wizzy on Apr 4, 2011 10:01:37 GMT 1, .......and dont forget the (almost) 25% extra commission to pay on top of hammer when you bid.
edit. 26.4% inc VAT.
IMO some auction houses are getting too greedy, they make from the seller and from the buyer, also add ons like ins. and extra for catalogue pics, also a percentage of reserve on unsold lots, greedy. So remember to bid only 75% of the value you reckon its worth!.

no, no, no (in a high pitched ladies voice)
yes, all auction houses are on 25% now... greedy yes, but then everybody does quote when banksy or gemeos hit big prices, the total price sold... never the real hammer price!
so you cant have it both ways.
i wouldnt pay extra for cat fees, or photos, or reserves... you can haggle that.

You are incorrect, all auction houses are NOT on 25% now, DNFA has always been high on commission rate.

I believe you should be bidding 79% of the value you think it's worth (instead of 75%).

I'm afraid that is a common mathematical mistake. To clarify this for other members, the percentage is calculated by 1/1.264 (assuming the premium is indeed 26.4%), which equals 79.11% (to 4 significant digits), i.e. if Β£1000 is the maximum price you are willing to pay, then your maximum bid should be Β£791.1.
So, roughly, 80%. Just trying to help!

Regarding Damien's comment, it should be good for anyone bidding at a real auction to have a higher limit not to go over that woud take into account the fees (unless you have unlimited funds or a piece you want desperately!).
People quote prices including premium because when you buy, you kind of include the fees in how much you're looking to spend ;D.
