I understand that but why go with a house that has little history with an artist when larger houses are achieving high prices on the same artist?
That and issues with internet bidding seem to me to be enough to take something like a faile piece and pass it along to sothebys...
edited to add: take something like a D*face hrh lenticular
feb 08 bonhams: 4800 GBP jun 08 dreweatts: 1800 GBP
Dreweatts did well with banksy works but some of the lesser known artists arent achieving as high prices as they could with other houses.

Fair point, it will be interesting to see what their next sale goes like. The choice is up to the seller in the end i suppose.

Dreweatts Art Auctions π¬π§, by fatherxmas on Aug 18, 2008 19:34:12 GMT 1, Dont really understand this, as the auctioneer at the beginning did state that if he missed any bidders he would continue the sale... Is that a usual thing to do at a professional auction house though? Continue bids after the hammer has fallen? I've not heard of it before, but then I've only been to a handful of auctions.
The understanding ive had and being to many property auctions from when i was knee high to now is that when the hammer falls. Thats the price wether it met the reserve or not. There is no such thing as ooooooo wait i was meant to bid, cna we start it off again. Personally gp, i would of accepted the Β£9800 bid and pull it out of the auction. Like you say its funny how it just went over the reserve, inside dealings possibly..

Sorry Fatherxmas that is incorrect, i too have attended auctions most of my life, it is all at the auctioneers discretion, if he wants to restart or resell a lot he can and will do so, i have seen a handful of occasions when this has happened and it always causes some kind of fuss.

Oh, This is news to me. Because why would he re-start/resell a lot? Is it because he or she didnt see someone bidding? I understand when soemthing doesnt meet a reserve @ the end of the auction you can come to a sort of agreement (property auction) but i dont know if this is the same with art auctions.

Dreweatts Art Auctions π¬π§, by Deleted on Aug 18, 2008 23:58:56 GMT 1, Hello Fatherxmas. The auctioneer always has say so in his or her auction room. I have been in attendance when someone has got there late or the "bidding up off the wall" has not gone according to plan or the seller has moaned and the lot has been re auctioned, it always causes a good deal of grief but it happens. edit: To be honest i have not seen this happen at a dedicated Art sale though.
just for example and without predjudice. www.bloomsburyauctions.com/info/conditions?PHPSESSID=574e390ab1698cb87857887ce1961baf

Dreweatts Art Auctions π¬π§, by orangematt on Aug 19, 2008 0:04:06 GMT 1, Ive also been to a fair number of auctions , and though it is rare it can happen ... the auctioneer misses a bidder ! hammer down then sees the bidder and apologises and continues the auction !! not a good scenario i agree ... but we are all human .
In the case being discussed the 'watcher' standing next to the auctioneer was pointing and saying new bidder to the auctioneer when he let the hammer fall and immediately retracted the action to include the bidder that the 'spotter' was telling him about ...
perfectly legitimate IMO
you couldn't decide to bid after hammer has fallen and expect the auction to open up again .. that NEVER happens .
edit : i have also been in auction rooms when the highest bidder suddenly 'disappears' !!! then often the auctioneer will open up bidding again starting with the under bidder or completely wiping the slate and starting again !

I know there were some mixed responses to the quality of work at the first dreweatts auction however it looks as though they've got some awesome pieces for this one.

When I bought from Patricia, nothing had been sold, so I know she sells in good faith, but none the less, her main aim is to sell.

Dreweatts Art Auctions π¬π§, by lee3 on Sept 15, 2008 16:42:08 GMT 1, Interesting, thanks for posting. My quick thoughts are that it is a better collection than their previous urban art auction. There is one lot in there that I will be requesting a condition report on. On the whole though, unless they have reserves much lower than some of those low estimates, i beleive there will be more than a few bought in lots as I think this pricing will look agressive by the time this auction takes place. I hope I'm wrong on the latter but prevailing economic conditions are changing rapidly.
