Dreweatts Art Auctions π¬π§, by romanywg on Feb 27, 2009 14:17:06 GMT 1, From what I've just seen from the auction results (And sorry but I have not seen any of the images beforehand) at first glance it looks like poor pieces by artists that shouldn't even be in an Auction this early in their careers. Is this a fault of the Gallerys or the artists I don't know. If I knew nothing about 'Urban Art' and was dragged along to this motley bunch by someone who was trying to make me appreciate UA, I would be put off. You can't have an Urban art auction without some quality in there. The only piece I would have walked away with is the Supine and that was a bargain. What some of these others are doing in an auction is the death of Urban Art. IMO

Dreweatts Art Auctions π¬π§, by robo on Feb 27, 2009 15:56:04 GMT 1, I agree romanywg. I was listening to the audio stream and there was an embarrassed silence when some of the lots were announced, they were so unlikely to be of interest at anywhere near their asking prices. A lot of padding, though some quality, notably the Faile, the Banksy No ball games, the Bast on wood and the rather good Mau Mau original (went for bargain price!).

Dreweatts Art Auctions π¬π§, by mammal1 on Feb 27, 2009 16:36:35 GMT 1, Thought prices were reasonable in the main for both buyers and sellers. Even the higher end stuff that wasn't sold didn't seem to miss the mark by too much. No Ball Games was one of the best executed Banksys I've seen and the Neate Blue Couple was stunning. Oh to be able to splash the cash on those! Items that do not sell ALWAYS 'seem to miss the mark by (not) too much' This is because the auctioneers shill bid them up to the reserve hoping someone comes in takes it too the reserve and shazam - it's sold. If a piece does not go above the reserve it's very very difficault to know how it was really doing. There are a few exceptions, take banskys meet the flockers - my guess is that this never even got a real bid at the starting price of 20k and after being somewhat already deflated the auctioneer found it hard to justify shill bidding it up to the reserve of 40k and just folded. While I'm talking about that piece, was this the only piece in the charity thing that had a reserve and only a percentage of the sale was going to charity? Seems strange for Banksy not to donate the whole sum as charity has been something that he has done wonders for in the past.
Meet the Flockers. Awesomeness

Dreweatts Art Auctions π¬π§, by snausages on Feb 27, 2009 16:56:39 GMT 1, Financial Breakdown for lots 1 - 70: Total Hammer Price - Β£129,130 Total Inc Buyers Premium - Β£154,956 Buyers Premium (excluding tax) - Β£25,826 Total return to DNFA - Circa Β£40k depending on what deals were done on the 'star' lots. 40k in one day! I don't know what kind of overhead this thing costs but I know christies has sales of things like movie posters and maps etc. where the avg. lot is about Β£400-600. If they can afford to do that then Β£40k for an urban auction isn't bad. And if next time a Banksy OG goes for over 100k then bam they get about double.
The question is whether it's good to keep this stuff separated from 'reglar' art?

What? This can't be true. Why would Dreweatts NOT accept post sale bids on unsold items? They would only be handicapping themselves. Every auction I've seen solicits bids after sale. I have a hard time understanding why Dreweatts would not accept post sale bids.

Dreweatts Art Auctions π¬π§, by Daniel Silk on Sept 10, 2009 0:42:51 GMT 1, Its strange coz when you look at some of those old Oil paintings in that auction you sort of expect them to be a Banksy and you go looking for the bit he has added.
Would be a bit of fun if Banksy did a piece like that and put it in a random auction room without anyone knowing
