Dreweatts Art Auctions ๐ฌ๐ง, by skanky on Apr 22, 2010 20:54:52 GMT 1, Not a big fan of this auction house and the sooner the name Urban Art Auction disapears the better IMO. The Adam Neate portrait sold in the end for ยฃ14,400 which is a good deal for someone but not my favourite of his portraits. The pic of the pieces for me was the Ron English Sunflower if anyone on here owns it and would take an offer to sell let me know.

Dreweatts Art Auctions ๐ฌ๐ง, by edcase on Apr 22, 2010 21:10:34 GMT 1, Skanky - with you on all of that especially the Ron English piece.
As for the Gavin Turk, I don't care what anyone says or whether you like the specific piece, when you compare ยฃ750 to the prices paid for some pieces in this auction that frankly I wouldn't use as wrapping paper, I'm sorry, but you're smoking crack.
We're talking about an artist with 20+ years of provenance at the highest international levels. As you say, Hirst he is not, but he has a massively diverse body of work, solo / museum shows around the world and a major global contemporary collector base. After Hirst, he is far and away the most successful and high profile artist in that auction. I happen to think it's an amusing and clever piece of work, and it get's more comments from visitors to my house than the rest of my collection PUT TOGETHER. That is an important part of a work of art, for me at least. Anyone sticking their nose in the air because it's ยฃ750 'for a house brick' is just ignorant IMHO, but hey we can't all agree.

Dreweatts Art Auctions ๐ฌ๐ง, by Pattycakes on Apr 22, 2010 22:20:20 GMT 1, Actually Ed I would say Peter Doig is "far and away" a more high profile and successful artist than Turk, probably then followed by Emin and the Chapmans in the auction - not that any of this is relevant. I was pointing out that Turk's output has for the past 5 or so years been frankly quite repetitive and of little real importance, as far as I am concerned he's not made anything of real significance since Nomad.

I'll be honest, I didn't even notice there was a Doig in there.
As for Emin and Jake/Dinos, how exactly are you measuring success? Sales? Auction results? Column inches.
Either way, my point still stands that ยฃ750 for that piece represented by far and away better 'value' than some of the frankly ridiculous results for some of the other works on sale there.

Dreweatts Art Auctions ๐ฌ๐ง, by hlarmy on Apr 23, 2010 4:20:39 GMT 1, Ed, doesn't that depend on your reasons for buying art in the first place?
I would agree with you in that it is better 'value' if value is considered in terms of holding value / investment, rather than aesthetic quality. To someone who values the latter more than the former, this is completely subjective and may represent much better value. Personally I don't think it is better value... it's a brick - nothing more, nothing less. It's poor art in my opinion and I wouldn't display it. Some of the so-called lesser art that sold for similar prices by less established artists are much better value for money in my opinion as they are good paintings that would sit well on the wall. Maybe I'm just being argumentative

Dreweatts Art Auctions ๐ฌ๐ง, by edcase on Apr 23, 2010 12:10:04 GMT 1, Well, there is only so much more space in a house, and mine are full and then some, which only leaves things like the brick, faile boxes etc.
I had a nice glass presentation case and description plaque made for it, and as I said earlier it gets more attention than the rest of my collection, including the Parla print it sits in front of.

That looks great edcase and I think the Parla/Turk work really well together.
I'm not a a fan of much conceptual art but I think I like the brick. There's a lot about it that I shouldn't like, but I can't help but like it for some reason.

Dreweatts Art Auctions ๐ฌ๐ง, by snausages on Apr 23, 2010 17:05:45 GMT 1, sounds fishy to me, and not fair on faile or parla to be honest as the works submitted were rock bottom in quality. trolleys for 3.5k? i sold mine for ยฃ1350 last week - someone has severely burnt themselves there.. Yeah, I will trade my colour trolley for a signed granny ASAP. Seriously, it's in your favor but I'll add a small amount of cash, pm if you got one!
Wish I could have bid on the radar rat, what happened to the LIITA print?
Faile box was just ok but a better investment than prints if you have some money, the prints, I've said before, ยฃ2000 for a young contemporary artist screenprint is a lot of money, I'd rather pick up a Ruscha litho and pocket the change.
I wouldn't say the Parla's were rock bottom in quality but the watercolours way overestimated. I thought the 48 inch canvas was alright, and considering what people were claiming that his paintings were retailing for last year, I though it would have sold...
And I mostly agree with print guru about Turk. I don't know about the brick but the rehashed warhol prints he put out recently are really contrived. His earlier more conceptual, sculptural work was really strong but haven't liked his recent work much.
And Peter Doig is definitely the biggest name in the auction, but why was he here?

Fair enough but it's not out of line to suggest that might have happened and I wasn't making any value judgement even if it had. That would be pretty standard practice in the art world. Try reading "The โฌ12M Shark" by Don Thompson if you don't believe me.
