Critic blasts Damien Hirst as 'tacky', by Pattycakes on Sept 11, 2008 16:54:13 GMT 1, I was just at Sotheby's, Hirst and his manager Mr. Dunphy were there strutting their stuff, I think a lot of people are predicting it to fail, but after speaking with a friend of mine in the Contemporary Art Department it seems Sotheby's think it's going to do very well indeed - certainly there were a lot of well heeled Russians looking around!

There are some amazing works for sale and then some not so amazing butterfly paintings. The Auction Catalogues (there are 5 of them) are ยฃ50 but are excellent quality! Here's a sneak photo I took as there were just so many staff around it was hard to get even the one.

Critic blasts Damien Hirst as 'tacky', by Deleted on Sept 11, 2008 21:23:33 GMT 1, I see his works as cool products and not pieces of art. I also don't think the bloke has a sound philosophy behind most of his works so therefore I do not see them as credible pieces of art. In the documentaries I have watched, the ramblings about death, life etc. etc. are laughable to me. One of the meanings he came up with is that his works are designed to make viewers think about tens of different subjects - Fair enough concept for a piece of work, but I don't think his work deserves to command those prices. There are far more exciting, deeper, more creative and intelligent artist out there.

I like his stuff, clearly I wish he was more within my price bracket but if I was some Russian billionaire I'd buy some Hirst pieces before I bought another football club

He's only following on from Warhol, Koons, MBW and many others that don't actually do the work themselves. You pay for the concept. Considering all these works were done in 2008, or so the catalogue says, it would have taken 1 person 40 years to make them all. To me some are stunning, the large splash paintings and taxidermy, but there is a lot of dross there too.

It was a bunch of scrap wood and an old washing up liquid bottle all stuck together! Forgot what the piece was called.
