Buying art from forum members, by stevieray101 on Jan 13, 2010 19:57:15 GMT 1, OK this issue has come up a few times for me in the last couple of days so any help from you guys would be much appreciated.
What is the most secure way to pay for art on this forum i.e. how does the buyer protect himself?
Using ebay and Paypal you are covered by their policies, BUT if you only use Paypal I don't think you're covered. Also fees are involved.
I'm trying to work out a deal with a guy from the US so meeting up and paying in cash is going to be tough.
I'm not happy just doing a bank transfer, what security does that give me? It's all done on good will.
Answers on a postcard please...

Buying art from forum members, by dantefires on Jan 13, 2010 20:01:49 GMT 1, Can ask some of the members on here if they have dealt with the seller before to see if they have reliable feedback.
Maybe, they can send the print to a friend thats local to you and you can arrange to meet up etc.

Buying art from forum members, by mookie on Jan 13, 2010 20:05:57 GMT 1, All the purchases I have made on here have been done with a little trust that the seller will not rip you off. You will have no cover if you do a bank transfer and I think you would struggle to get your money back through paypal if you tell them the situation.
Nearly all the deals I've done have gone well. The only problem I have had is when people say prints are in mint condition when they are not. I don't know if it's just me being picky but when I ask if it is in mint condition and they say yes I don't expect it to arrive a few days later and find out it has a crease in that I don't believe could possibly have happened in the post. Very annoying but luckly that has only been with a couple of low value prints.

Just a thought (which has probably been proposed before)...
... has anyone thought of offering an 'escrow service' (I think that's the right term...)
Basically, it would mean a trusted forum member acting as the go-between...
1. Seller sends art on to trusted forum member, buyer sends cash.
2. Only when both are in safe receipt does trusted forum member send on art and transfer cash.
I'm sure there are a few of us that would do it as a one-off favour at cost.
Silky - maybe an idea for a bit more revenue if your offered it as a service.
Regards,
Adam.

Get a few references for people they have dealt with before on here, and check.
if they cant or wont give, i would pass on the purchase
good luck

Buying art from forum members, by Michael Jacob on Jan 13, 2010 20:08:35 GMT 1, i agree with dante - see if anyone will vouch for them. i also look at longevity on the forum and posts. seems like if theyve been here a while and stood the test of time, it helps validate them a little. Im in the states.

Buying art from forum members, by stevieray101 on Jan 13, 2010 20:11:08 GMT 1, Looking at this objectively it's hard to just send someone ยฃ2k for a print, when you've only "met" them online. How much of a prat would you feel like if you got ripped off? You'll never see that cash again and I'm having a hard time getting past this point.
Having said that I like adamk's idea very much and would be happy to go for something like that.

The first deal on here I did was for a grey rain nola a year ago. The guy was in Scotland and I'm in Bristol, I wanted that print like mad so sent him the 3k via bank transfer and waited nervously for it to arrive in perfect condition the next day. I did my research on the guy, he gave me his name, address and workplace and it all checked out so I went with the deal. If you get references and as much details as possible that's the most you can do to stop someone running off with your money. I think most of the time you get a feeling when the person is legit or a scammer... just walk away if you get a bad feeling about it.

Buying art from forum members, by jakek on Jan 13, 2010 20:46:07 GMT 1, I think if a print is worth 2 grand or so it's worth enough to justify going and collecting it yourself if possible. This saves the possibilities of being stung on the deal or the piece being damaged in the post. Yeap, it may be a pain or not be possible but on all of my high value purchases or trades i've collected the piece.
Having said that i have had successful trades as both a buyer and a seller on here, but as people have suggested it's always worth getting references.

Buying art from forum members, by dantefires on Jan 14, 2010 0:21:04 GMT 1, With escrow, what happens if theres any damage to the print, whose liable and do you really want the aggro to be with involved something like that?
The chances are the seller also has an ebay account, why not ask for their username and look at their feedback, what they've sold previously etc.
You could just post the members username on here and ask people to vouch for them.
Paypal is for any payments and is just sent to the recipients email address. Beware though that if you are paying in USD, the exchange rates Paypal use are criminal and end up costing you quite a few percent more than it otherwise should.

Buying art from forum members, by bullet on Jan 14, 2010 0:27:04 GMT 1, yeah paypal. i do think there should be a list of people on here where there is some sort of poll and you just post feedback ratings. Even though literally no one likes to admit it, i think i have traded with the majority of main posters on here or sold/bought things and no one else would realise that so just somewhere to leave feedback would be good.
thats my pennies worth.

Sounds really good, i did my first trades last month with forum members and i have to say everything worked out very well. Ther're a few good guys out there who would be perfect for this job. I'm new to this board and had a warm welcome and many help from other forum members. For me, this forum feels like home now, and i really feel secure with my trades in the past. Thanks again mates.

Buying art from forum members, by Heavyconsumer on Jan 14, 2010 9:15:53 GMT 1, I usually use bank transfer or post a cheque and of course there is a need for a bit of trust.
I agree with Manty's comment - ALWAYS get references and make sure you check them - some members may have written references in an Expressobeans accout as an extra indicator. I wouldn't deal with anyone without references or whose forum history is unclear and isn't prepared to clarify if a face to face deal were impossible. I also pay attention to their comm's and clarify everything before proceeding. Having said that, I've bought, sold and swapped through the forum, maybe a dozen or so times and never had any issues and always dealt with the nicest people.
Ultimately, you will have to send money and wait for the art, so if you feel comfortable dealing with a member, it's a lot easier, but if you feel very nervous about someone for any reason, maybe you should think twice. I once backed out of a deal because the guy couldn't send clear messages and kept mistyping stuff, even key details (like the price!) - in the end it made me question whether he might not be serious even though hr probably was genuine. Clear and friendly comm's are very important to me and I won't deal without that and references.
Good luck.

Buying art from forum members, by Harveyn on Jan 14, 2010 10:12:22 GMT 1, Trust and references.
I happen to know who you are dealing with in this instance and he is as cool as you get.
I have made dozens of purchases via wire transfer for usually fairly large sums of money and in the end it comes down to blind trust. I guess some day I might get stung.
If you have references and trust I would avoid paypal fees. If there is an element of doubt then use paypal.

As for references etc. I have never dealt with any of you so this would be a tricky one. However I have a 100% 1700+ve ebay profile for buying and selling which must count for something.

Buying art from forum members, by kennas on Jan 14, 2010 11:01:15 GMT 1, All good advice. I always prefer face to face for higher value stuff as well. If you're going to spend 2k on a print, why not an extra ยฃ60 on an easyjet day return? I appreciate this isn't always possible. Also it avoids the vandalism that always seems to happen in the post.

In that case i would certainly avoid dealing with Fatherxmas, aka Distinctive Vision, aka bubble and squeak, aka Paul, aka Alfie
I previously sold him my burger king and all went ok. when i put my mates coloured trolleys up for sale last week he tried to play me off against ronhill and once he found out i sold it for a better price to leephill (thanks for the easy transaction ;D) got very personnal and abusive.
This guy is no more than a very jealous, naieve pathetic little boy.
He boasted to me about him and 4 friends having 40k to buy art so they are going to set up a gallery in soho later this year.
He is an ugly, vile little individual who drives a little ford ka with racing stripes and i urge anyone who is approached by email or otherwise by him to stay well clear.
i feel annoyed that i ever did a deal with this guy in the first place, and the fact that he called everyone on here c**t last night show the lack of respect he has for anyone he will do business with.
The really sad thing is that he keeps coming back here even though he's been banned numerous times as this is what his future business 'venture' depends on.
i have done numerous deals with many forum members and can provide many references and unfortunately this is the only one to go sour. Stay away from him!

Easy as that isn't this just for ebay transactions? Nope paypal can be used independantly as stated by others. You can get the seller to send you an invoice through paypal as well. Exchange rate has a 2.5% fee included but a bank transfer will also charge something.

Buying art from forum members, by curiousgeorge on Jan 14, 2010 11:53:04 GMT 1, I would go with paypal for overseas myself(not a slight against overseas members), if trying to save fee's and something goes very wrong. It would be a case of spoiling the ship for a ha'p'orth of tar.

Buying art from forum members, by stevieray101 on Jan 14, 2010 13:11:36 GMT 1, This is all very good stuff, I reckon this thread should be made sticky to help newbies like myself. There is some great info on these pages.
I think the way to go is:
1. References from forum members 2. Get "real" details from them i.e. name, address, telephone numbers, even work info if they are willing to give it to you and then check them out. 3. Finally use Paypal if you're not sure
It's not fool proof, but it gives you some piece of mind at least if things go sour. Send the Feds round to their place of work - that should be interesting!
