BRP Heap Show Swoon/David Ellis/Monica Canilao, by GB on Oct 26, 2007 10:55:28 GMT 1, could you buy anything??? saw some people walking around with rolled up paper, but by the way they were being treated i cant imagine they were prints....
when i was at black rat a month or so ago, there was a new Blek le rat print, which i was expecting to be sold last night, but due to the exhibition it wouldnt make sense to sell anything.

BRP Heap Show Swoon/David Ellis/Monica Canilao, by gozgoz on Oct 26, 2007 11:20:14 GMT 1, There are some pics on "another site" which make sense of the big brown bubble installation, but at the show tonight there was no chance of getting the separation necessary to figure out what it actually was. Hiya Cracka - great to meet you tonight, and Carlito and FPR and Patrick - in fact, the usual free beer crowd!
Here's my take (and im trying my best not to sound overtly pretentious and i promise i wont use words like postmordern and juxtapoosition and life and death):
Some of us figured that it was a huge man crouching down. and the power lines all come from the perfect(ish) castle that is atop it. and if u look in, it ticks as well, so it kinda reminded me of Akira and how this fat, disgusting, mass (opulence, wealth, capitalism, greed blah blah) and how they provide the life line (electricity to the shanty town (where there was real life and real people and real culture) and inside this grotesque mass of a human was a ticking bomb which was filleed with all things high tech and unnatural and unhuman and it was gonna take over everything eventually.
Gosh i sound like a pretnetious twaaat.

BRP Heap Show Swoon/David Ellis/Monica Canilao, by ABC on Oct 26, 2007 13:20:31 GMT 1, Range was £300 for small works to £35k for the installation, not all was by swoon, apart from the free books, that were the nuts, the best piece IMO for sale was a work by David Ellis at £3.5k.

BRP Heap Show Swoon/David Ellis/Monica Canilao, by ABC on Oct 26, 2007 13:34:34 GMT 1, It was funny becuase a few forum members, plus one Barred poster was guarding the arse hole of the installation for Ellis, as everyone wanted to put their head in and have a look.

BRP Heap Show Swoon/David Ellis/Monica Canilao, by finsburyparkranger on Oct 26, 2007 14:00:27 GMT 1, Jesus what a fcuking hangover. Very messy night. Swoon is very pretty, thought she would be older, didn't get to chat to her though. Shep was there and mat small and mantis among many. Great night. Although the show was very different, I think its refreshing to not see loads of frames and canvasses. Also loads of great graffiti around the show.
I said to mat small 'how come you only paint black guys these days' he said 'how come no one asks Conor harrington why he only paints white guys these days'. Beautiful come back. ;D

BRP Heap Show Swoon/David Ellis/Monica Canilao, by a4mnt on Oct 26, 2007 18:15:17 GMT 1, I'm glad Ranger has a hangover, its makes me feel better about myself for refusing the cocktails. It was a school night after all.
As rattusamorus has pointed out (fantastic write up by the way), I am a bona fide member of the free beer crowd, which i'm a little embarrassed about, but at least we have a smiling face for the cameras.
Gozgoz, i thought your write up was great and once again i embarrassed not to notice these things myself. If you wanted to know how long the queue was for the bar, or how many ridges there were at the bottom of my bottle when tipped up towards the ceiling, then i'm your man. Want to know about art....move on. Now i'm appreciating the installation a little more with that synopsis.
Admittedly, my art taste is quite basic, or so i realise when I see an installation like this, but i'm learning to look outside of the box and not follow the crowd with my choices of works, but something like this is a little beyond me. I'm sorry. I saw hubbly bubbly pipes tied to a dead branch and a big sea cow made from packing tape filled with shredded paper and paint tins. I actually thought they'd just tidied everything up into the big sea cow until i realised you could enter through its back door. Whoops. This is the same back door that we 'guarded' for a while, while someone cleaned up some spillage that had gone into the electronic circuits making some basic musical wibblings, or so the story goes. I'm a bit gutted no-one wanted to sit inside the teepee with me, it looked like fun.
David Ellis came up at one point and said hello. I didn't know who he was or that he was an artist, I just thought he was a friendly geezer. So when he said his name was Dave, i jokingly said are you David Choe (I knew he wasn't). This went down like a french kiss at a family reunion. I'll get my coat.
Talking about coats, David Ellis was wearing a striking yellow rainmac. He was clearly concerned about the London weather. The show was indoors, but maybe he was prepared for rain if he needed to nip outside for a fag. Nick Walker had a rather oversized flat cap on, in fact, thinking about it, you could probably spot the artists by all their outrageous (i could think of another word but won't) dress senses. Swoon was attired quite normally, thankfully enough, as was Matt Small, even though he was staggeringly drunk. He was a nice guy though, but we'll see whether he sticks to his promise of watching the game with me and Carlito on Sunday.
So all in all a good night. Great to meet ABC and also Rusty and Hungrig from the other side. Plurker, I looked for you mate!! next time eh!
I left carlito at the bar with Matt Small, so he can tell anymore stories that arise from there......
;D

BRP Heap Show Swoon/David Ellis/Monica Canilao, by guest2 on Oct 26, 2007 21:24:07 GMT 1, Whatever the reviews , it was a fun night, the funniest thing was Carlito falling over his own feet and landing on the massive budda thing and putting a big dent in it and then FPR (who was next to him) was stunned and held on to part of the 'shanty town' in shock and several pieces of wood came crashing down!!!! I wish it was on film cos rightly or wrongly it was just the funniest thing ever! ..... 2nd funniest thing was 10 grown adults playing 'bundle' in front of the budda, Matt Small being the ring leader. Matt is a legend!
