Shepard Fairey Ninteeneightyfouria Exhibition, by greeneny on Nov 1, 2007 2:22:03 GMT 1, And very lucky you are Bob since I had emailed Stolen after choosing two of the hand painted silkscreens on wood from the preview pics they sent me of the show yesterday promising that it would be first come first served but today had a different story which was that "collectors bought all of it within 40 minutes and there was nothing left. Gee, I'd hate to think I was just jerked around but it sure sounds like it. Meanwhile I found silkscreens of six Shepard Fairey images from small editions that I was able to buy here from a gallery in the US so in the end I'm happy.

Shepard Fairey Ninteeneightyfouria Exhibition, by meatbag on Nov 1, 2007 2:30:51 GMT 1, I only wish I could make the trip but I did however pick up this original he made for a special halloween exhibition in NYC last night. I was so luck to get this piece.
Also, I've seen dozens of prints by Shep but this was the first OG I've seen and I love all the hand added details and textures he used on this. Here's some fun based off the Balzac character....

Shepard Fairey Ninteeneightyfouria Exhibition, by Macdeee on Nov 1, 2007 10:55:11 GMT 1, Great show. I popped in last night and was blown away... Its just such a massive space to fill and he does it. Picked up the show print (limited to 200 I think) and got a free poster from Glorias, which was cool. Going tonight aswell. Sweeeeeet.

Shepard Fairey Ninteeneightyfouria Exhibition, by GB on Nov 1, 2007 11:18:24 GMT 1, i think the show print was ยฃ95, they had 300 there. the other prints were runs of between 300-350 and they only had 5 of each, most were ยฃ95.
i was also there quite early trying to bag myself a 12" print, but some record exec had come in and bought the lot!!!!!!!
Managed to get myself a aluminium piece which is AMAZING! i LOVE it!!!!
Shepard was such a lovely guy, chatting to everyone and just enjoying the night!
shame i didnt bump into anyone from here, but talked to toby from SS, who was a top guy!
peace

Shepard Fairey Ninteeneightyfouria Exhibition, by Curley on Nov 1, 2007 11:26:08 GMT 1, I thought the space was great but far to sterile and clean for street art. I prefer to see Obey on the street where its interacting with its surroundings.
That said its a good show and worth a look

Shepard Fairey Ninteeneightyfouria Exhibition, by carlito on Nov 2, 2007 11:00:30 GMT 1, can anyone explain the appeal of Obey's work to me? I went last night and saw a lot of images I've seen before - feels very homogenised / 'brand specific' and the wit is kind of obvious (i.e. not witty at all)...am I missing something...?
before I start getting negged for holding a viewpoint thats not popular remember this is a forum where opinions are to be explored - i thankyou

First off I don't like all his stuff but I've got a few bits that I really like. To me it takes me back to the '80's when I was far more actively into protest politics, at times it seemed like everyone I knew had a print of Lenin,Trotsky or Che on the wall or Marx and Engels on the bookshelf. It takes me back to those carefree days of giving NFers practical demonstrations on the meaning of no platform for fascism or planning how to fuck over the poll tax. It's a familiar aesthetic to me which I find comforting. No idea why anyone else likes it though, I remember reading a post on the giant board complaining about "all this commie shit I've got on my walls" strange.

Shepard Fairey Ninteeneightyfouria Exhibition, by greeneny on Nov 2, 2007 15:38:51 GMT 1, Good descriptions above of why Obey is appealing to many including myself. Not negative at all in my opinion. Its very easy eye candy and it's familiar to many because we have seen it before but so what? I like to park my brain sometimes and just lean back and enjoy the view.
