New Faile Release: November 12th, by absyrd on Nov 6, 2007 22:57:06 GMT 1, I think it is also good that people with old, crap comps and still on dial-up will have a chance, too.
Then again, everyone complains either way when they don't get one... or ten.

New Faile Release: November 12th, by robertlondon on Nov 6, 2007 23:50:18 GMT 1, After the Grannies debarcle, I sure there were rumours (perhaps even a flippant statement) about POW using a lottery system to sell their remaining LA prints.
Month of so later I'm standing in the queue for the Santa's Ghetto "Flag". Person I'm standing next to, yaps on about how he's registered loads of email addresses with the POW website in anticipation of an impending lottery.
No doubt he's registering now...

Robert
I agree this is a susceptible to abuse as any other system.

Yup, there's no such thing as a perfect system. even eBay which has been in business for over 10 years gets regular abuse from shill bidders or scam auctions.

New Faile Release: November 12th, by holden on Nov 7, 2007 2:05:15 GMT 1, Didnt get a trollies, didnt get a Choe, cant queue up because I'm in Sydney, wasnt smart enough to get my name on an unknown list for the latest Ian Francis prints..... Isnt this just another way of doing it so its equally fair/unfair (the cookie jar seems half full to me) to get a print?? From what Ive seen with the purchasing of prints is that it is all a lottery in one way or another. Some people have more time to play the Private Dic with it that others. At least, IMHO, I will have time to browse, time to put an email of interest in and then get on with doing something else. Mindlessly F5'ing sporadically for a month sux and for me didnt work. No problem with it but I wont be doing it again. A few hundred quid extra on the secondary has to be worth it compared to my time lost in the chase.....or is that whats appealing?

New Faile Release: November 12th, by RBK on Nov 7, 2007 4:01:07 GMT 1, As everyone should know by now - there is no perfect solution. At least Faile is trying different remedies. There are flippers whether it is a blanket internet release at X o'clock or a lottery. At least with this plan you have the luxury of previewing images and not having to sit in front of a computer all day long. I realize there are also negatives to this plan - but you can't blame them for attempting to make it as good/bearable as possible.
I'm still incredibly impressed how they handled the last print issue. To think of other artists/print houses taking the time to create & produce a new image is impressive/unimaginable (and this is coming from someone who didn't get sh!t unfortunately).

New Faile Release: November 12th, by Dead Elvis on Nov 7, 2007 5:29:37 GMT 1, I am onboard the "For" vessel here. This is a great chance for people like myself who do not have the luxury of sitting near a computer all day f5-ing. This at least gives me a shot. Even if people register multiple email accounts, they have to have a Paypal account to match that same email account, so I really don't think that will be much of an issue. Everyone knows in advance about Faile prints anyway, and I'm glad Faile have the balls to try this system out.

New Faile Release: November 12th, by foreman on Nov 7, 2007 6:41:39 GMT 1, it looks to me like they are only selling originals... if there on canvas or wood im guessing there gonna be in the 6-10k usd range... how many people here are ready to pay that? im trying to figure out what the odds of getting one of these is? 20? 40 people? the last print release was price fairly high so it will be interesting to see what they offer... i donno if there original stuff is in my price range anymore??

New Faile Release: November 12th, by rolyateel on Nov 7, 2007 12:57:39 GMT 1, I don't think there is any completely fair way of doing this. I like the fact that you can browse before you choose, but thats the only good point as I can see it.
I think they just need to invest in a decent checkout system (protx seems to work ok-ish on PoW) & be done with it. They then need to post images of ALL the upcomming prints, without revealing the edition size or price, so you can make your choice based on image alone. Then when they go on sale, if they're out of your price range then you don't buy.

New Faile Release: November 12th, by hypovalaemic on Nov 7, 2007 16:24:50 GMT 1, I prefer the old system where they give you a free print if you don't succeed in getting the print(s) that you lost out on. Yeah, it's great what you can do with free prints: www.Expressobeans/public/detail.php/67572 I'm sure that wasn't Faile's intention with these either.
Thats a real shame...guess it was bound to happen though

New Faile Release: November 12th, by starkiller on Nov 8, 2007 6:18:18 GMT 1, what everyone (i think) fails (no pun intended) to realize is that they could simply preview the works and the details (price, size, shape, color, etc) on the site days before starting the lottery or otherwise releasing the works for sale. that gives everyone a chance to decide and prepare for the days of hitting f5.
yes I think the lottery will be abused by flippers. personally I prefer the random time of day method, even though I ALWAYS miss out.

New Faile Release: November 12th, by slowmo on Nov 8, 2007 16:43:40 GMT 1, Audrey Kawasaki had it right, open up a print on an unlimited edition for a set amount of time. If you think the print is worth the money charged, you shouldn't care if everyone can get one and the edition could run into 1000's.
Downside for Faile is, they personally finish their prints, so could be in for a lot of work. But what about a 5 minute edition unnanounced? Just for the hand finished edition and then an hour of a straight print open edition like the strange encounters, which is announced. Everyone can get one, flippers won't buy one as they'll be fully aware anyone wanting one can get it and it removes the sticker aspect of it as you don't have to threat over missing out and have an hour to decide if you like it.

New Faile Release: November 12th, by Carnage NYC on Nov 8, 2007 17:01:43 GMT 1, i think the lottery system is worth a shot. as previously stated, it's a lottery anyway, and i think it's kinda naive to think that this will give flippers an advantage. who do you think those flippers are? old fat guys in shabby trenchcoats who only come out of the woodwork with their multiple email addresses when there's a sale?
no - they are your fellow board members (not to mention the growing crop of "galleries" that seem to have no shame when it comes to the immediate resale of prints at inflated prices, even though, strangely, hardly anyone seems to have a problem with that).

I agree with that. Whatever way you release something there will be flippers. Faile want to do something fairly and give everyone an equal opportunity to own their work. A lottery is fair. Sure some people may abuse it but no more or no less than other form of release.
