Bloomsbury Auctions ๐ฌ๐ง, by ejvaze on Nov 12, 2007 13:18:22 GMT 1, Forget the Banksys Bongo
I hope they get carried away with the Ian Hamilton Finlay portfolio of mine. Its really Super 13 Slikscreens!!!! a bargain at what they have put the estimate at.
FPR I think you will do well with your signed Golf Sale, Bloomsbury were enthusiastically advertising the fact that your Golf Sale was going in this sale Ages ago to me, not that I am in the market for a Golf Sale but fingers crossed for you.
It is also true that buyers expect sound provenience from Auction houses and if there are any doubts will sort it out.
Bloomsbury are a good Auction House who take provenance issues seriously.

Bloomsbury Auctions ๐ฌ๐ง, by BONGO on Nov 12, 2007 13:21:39 GMT 1, BONGO UNDERSTAND THAT PEOPLE WILLING TO PAY EXTRA FOR AUCTION PROV AS DISCUSSED, BUT IN REALITY A SURPRISING AMOUNT OF AUCTIONEREED ITEMS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGES AND LAST MINUTE WITHDRAWALS WHEN QUESTIONS ARE ASKED
AUCTION HOUSES ARE FAIRLY DEVALUED WITH RESPECT TO THEIR PRICE FIXING AND RACKETEERING HISTORY, BUT STILL ATTRACT A GREAT DEAL OF INTEREST DUE TO THE SPECTACLE INVOLVED.
BONGO THINK AUCTION HOUSE VS. EBAY IS LIKE COMPARING GOING TO SEE A FILM AT THE ODEON VS RENTING IT FROM BLOCKBUSTER OR BUYING PIRATE FROM A STREET SELLER - MOST PEOPLE VIEW CINEMA AS DAY OUT WITH A FILM ADDED IN, WHEREAS RENTING A DVD AND WATCHING AT HOME IS JUST A MEANS TO AN VIEWING END.
IF YOU WANT A FAIR PRICED AM FOR THE WALL, GO TO EBAY AND DEAL WITH GOOD SELLER. IF YOU WANT DAY OUT AND WANT TO FEEL SPECIAL, GO TO AUCTION AND PAY THE PREMIUM.
BONGO THINKS YOU SHOULD NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE LURE OF A SPECTACLE TO ENCOURAGE INTEREST, ESPECIALLY WITH VICTIMS WHO MAY NEVER USUALLY PENCIL IN ART AUCTION DATE IN THEIR DIARIES.
BONGO REMEMEBER THAT SHOPPING IS NOW CONSIDERED A LEGITIMATE RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY BY MUCH OF THE UK.BONGO KNOW THAT PEOPLE WANT TO MAKE THEIR OSTENTATIOUS RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES AS EXCITING AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, AS VISIBLE AS POSSIBLE.
BONGO THINK MANY PEOPLE LIKE TO SAY THEY BOUGHT ART AT AUCTION FOR PEER KUDOS, RATHER THAN SAY THEY BOUGHT IT ON EBAY FROM UNKNOWN MAN IN STOKE.

Good points Bongo BUT and it is a Big BUT
Buy off ebay from that unknown man in Stoke who may be selling you a fake? Damaged ? or non existent print or a prefect with provenance print, you take your chance and hope all the research and checking on the ebay seller is ok.
But with auctions you have the chance to see the item up close and inspect it even handle it in some cases and get time to look at it several times, if you want, and ask as many questions you want face to face. Despite your observations you can still pick up a bargain at auction, it just depends on the day and who is interested in the room or on the phone. I just hope my lot is not the bargain of the day

BONGO EMINENTLY FAMILIAR WITH POTTERIES AND ENVIRONS, BUT TO EMPAHISE POINT, BONGO USED AN EXAMPLE TO HIGHLIGHT A LOCATION AS UNCONNECTED WITH THE ART WORLD AS BONGO COULD MUSTER.
IN SHORT - BONGO DOES NOT ATTACH ANY STIGMA TO STOKE PER SE

Bloomsbury Auctions ๐ฌ๐ง, by Pattycakes on Nov 12, 2007 15:47:14 GMT 1, I've bought from both auction and the bay, frankly when I want a bargain I look to the bay, if I am buying something more specialised, the chances are auction is the only place I will find it. It's also true that with an auctioneers your guarantee is with them, and they take responsibility for the items authenticity. It's nice to feel safe, sure you pay for that but frankly if I'm spending a couple of grand on something I want to know that if there is a chance something is wrong with it I have recourse to return it months perhaps years later!

Bloomsbury Auctions ๐ฌ๐ง, by rats on Nov 12, 2007 21:22:48 GMT 1, If i wanted to spend a load of ยฃยฃยฃยฃ i wouldnt shop on ebay. They dont vouch for the seller or their items, they leave that up to the punter to suss out . The risk for buyers is too high and after youve paid up youve got a struggle to make a claim whereas theres very little risk and a whole load of accessible support with Sothebys or Christies etc. Whatever happens its a win win situation for EBay. I know a very good Ebay seller for cheap t-shirts if anyones interested

Bloomsbury Auctions ๐ฌ๐ง, by a4mnt on Nov 12, 2007 22:33:43 GMT 1, somebody please tell me BONGO is going to the xmas party? pleeeease.
I just want to see whether he really does shout ALL THE TIME and then i'm just going to wonder around next to him all night collecting pearls of wisdom, then i'm going to drunkenly offload them on unsuspecting other forum members as if they are my own.
its going to be wonderful.
ps - oh yeah, really can't see those bombers going for that sort of price, but interested to see what they do go for. how much does the auction house sting people for the service??

you'll have to register and with the larger auction houses you'll need ID and a credit card to put on file. Local auction houses you just need to turn up and get a bidding card by filling out a form with your name, address and contact number.

Bloomsbury Auctions ๐ฌ๐ง, by finsburyparkranger on Nov 15, 2007 14:44:55 GMT 1, Just received the bloomsbury catalogue. Its a real weighty coffee table beast. Just seen they've got a lichtinstein 'wham'. They had one of those at school, quite fancy getting one. Funny to see new prints like improvised minatuar prints and neate 2am print in an auction so soon after release.

Bloomsbury Auctions ๐ฌ๐ง, by RBK on Nov 15, 2007 18:05:07 GMT 1, Ah - that does make it somewhat better. I think I'm just letting my - "if you are going to buy something why not get it for the best deal you can type of guy"
I'm even slightly boughie but have no qualms about buying something on Ebay. Always thought it was funny those who have the mentality that they want to say they bought it at Sotheby's/etc. I'm more inclined/excited to say "I got a great deal on this"
I buy a Banksy print from a bum on the street if he had all the provenance in order ;D
