BANKSY SIGNED WHEEL CLAMP (BOUDICCA), by homeagreyhound on Jan 15, 2010 8:57:52 GMT 1, I am enquiring about a Banksy signed wheel clamp that we have-it was put on Boudicca's chariot in London for 12 days in 2005 as featured in 'Banksy Wall and Piece' book (Page 209) My cousin came across it as he cleans and maintains the statues in London and has had it since then in his lock up. Some of the paint has chipped off it but he was thinking of selling and we wanted to know what is the best way to do it what with it being so rare and such an unusual peice plus its mentioned in the book. Can anyone help? Many thanks

BANKSY SIGNED WHEEL CLAMP (BOUDICCA), by spirit on Jan 15, 2010 10:28:27 GMT 1, If it could be proved that this is indeed the actual clamp that Banksy used then you might be onto something. Unfortunately however, that is probably impossible - you won't get any authentication for it as Pest Control do not authenticate street pieces - therefore I'm afraid that in terms of value its probably worth no more than any other rusty old wheel clamp...
Best bet is to stick it on ebay and hope that someone will give you a couple of hundred quid for it.

BANKSY SIGNED WHEEL CLAMP (BOUDICCA), by Urban Cowboy on Jan 15, 2010 10:37:26 GMT 1, very nice to look at but in that condition and with usual street piece issues, I think eBay is the only way to go. You might do well.
Was it in that condition when your cousin got it as it is a bit offputting for potential buyers?

BANKSY SIGNED WHEEL CLAMP (BOUDICCA), by Curley on Jan 15, 2010 12:10:53 GMT 1, I would actually speaking to Pest Control about it as its not strictly a street piece i would say it was more an installation. They may even offer to take it off you hands as they might fancy having it back.

BANKSY SIGNED WHEEL CLAMP (BOUDICCA), by Daniel Silk on Jan 15, 2010 18:40:13 GMT 1, I think this is a bit different than your average street piece (if its real)
All the talk of COA sort of makes it sound like Banksy's work has no value unless it comes with a piece of paper Were talking about ART, not stocks and shares. No matter what, any REAL Banksy piece on paper, canvas, metal, wood, wall, has some sort of value as a piece of art.

true but without a COA, how do you know it is REAL - and if it's not real it's just a very expensive rusty old wheelclamp
Therein lies the Conundrum.....
And with this piece being what it is and in the condition it is - a photographic comparison is nigh on impossible

True! without VERY convincing photo evidence its worth practically nothing.

No, we're talking about a wheel clamp, that in the right location was a piece of art. On its own, autograph hunter area only, even if authentic, whats it worth? The value of the piece was the positioning. This only has value as a bit of Banksy, it is not a piece of art.

its not. i dont think that has ever been sold for anything other than £1000, (correct me if im wrong) trying to sell somethign for 300k and someone paying 300k are very different, in saying that i would presume as its a very well documented banksy its worth a few bob,
the problem lies in 15/30 years time when your banksy has no COA and the "banksy foundation" stamp denied on the back and its worth nothing.. a la Warhol.

BANKSY SIGNED WHEEL CLAMP (BOUDICCA), by dickturpin on Jan 20, 2010 15:58:22 GMT 1, I have to say this all seems to be going around in circles.... It does seem crazy to me that Pest Control will not authenticate street work... I mean I understand that Banksy does not want people ripping down his work to sell for their own gain that adds vandalism to property damage.. but surely if the work is done on private property and that is then sold to someone with it's integrity intact and the person who buys that work takes good care of it and preserves it for future display as an early piece of Banksy's Street Art then that is a positive thing and should be encouraged by Pest Control. But it seems to me that they just flatly will not authenticate any street work and sometimes deny authenticate pieces which does not seem fair or correct. Also to take a rather more extreme view surely if Banksy sprays on someone else's property which is illegal, who are they to tell people that they don't have a right to remove it, it sounds a bit like the pot calling the kettle etc.....smacks of hypocrisy to me?

BANKSY SIGNED WHEEL CLAMP (BOUDICCA), by walshy on Jan 21, 2010 12:06:40 GMT 1, oh he's got cancer you say? Oh in that case yeah i'll give you the, what was it you wanted, 300k for it? ok who do i make the cheque payable to? excuse my cynicism. The clamp looks more like it's got cancer, how did it get to look so bad if it was perfect when it went up, and wasn't up for long? (above; all very much meant in jest, and if your cousin does indeed have cancer my genuine and sincere thoughts are with you all. x)
classy post, well done

BANKSY SIGNED WHEEL CLAMP (BOUDICCA), by Happy Shopper on Jan 21, 2010 16:18:10 GMT 1, Just from that small photo I'd say this wheel clamp looks considerably more knackered than the one on the statue!
If your cousin has proof that he worked for the council and did that job... and even better if he took a photo of himself with the statue... then you have a vague chance of Authenticating it yourself!!

No,its not really relevant that his sister and son have also had it and that he was told yesterday it has spread to his stomach-the reason I mentioned it was to explain the sale as in its no good sitting there in his lock up and as a now self employed electrician (and not now working for the council cleaning statues for which of course he has proof having done so for many years) he could use the money as its worthless to him. It was destined for the skip and got thrown in the lock up as he had no knowledge of its potential importance and has been chipped as things have gone in and out of the lock up. Thanks to all of you who have made constructive comments and hope you sleep well at night Walshy.
