mau mau and tribesman trolleys, by br1stol on Jan 16, 2008 1:14:15 GMT 1, I remember mao mao doing a 'create create create, sell sell sell' piece with Dicy at Urban Games on Clapham Common in around 2000 - it was of a skateboarder doing a 360 kickflip into a shopping trolly... This boy has been using the trolly as a 'consumerist icon' for a long time now for sure.

mau mau and tribesman trolleys, by Gallery Grace on Jan 16, 2008 6:37:44 GMT 1, Nice to see some Mau Mau work that Banksy obviously got some of his inspiration from. Other Graffiti writers are often criticised for producing work that is thought to be similar to Banksys.
Big up Mau Mau ;D and + 1 for the interesting info
saw the other thread about who did the trolleys first and i have the photos from april 2004 of mau mau's stuff featuring tribesman - specifically kalahari bushmen (and women) and shopping trolleys - they were done on card in my garden in bethnal green and pasted up in various old st/shoreditch locations that night - some lasted a while but the girl only a few hours before someone peeled her off.. they formed part of his 'Fear Trade' series of work and showed kalahari bushmen hunting with 'bar code' bows and arrows - shopping trolleys were involved as a represenatation of western consumer culture but they were not specifically hunting the trolleys - so i would say that as a concept (rather than specific image) mau mau did use tribesmen and shopping trolleys first - and then banksy twisted the idea a bit ..is this biting? or just the inevitable conclusion of a fairly small scene where everyone knows each other and are kind of on the same wavelength..? the happy shopper was done in a devon college cafeteria around the same time - dont know if it is still there or not..there were other examples of his tribesman and shopping trolleys in the south west too.. the bushman firestarter was also done on plymouth bus station and mau mau ended being accused of inciting racial hatred (anyone who knows him knows how ridiculous this is) some 2 years after it was painted as people suddenly thought it was meant to be an al-queda type person - check this news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/devon/4687142.stmprobably an argument to be had here about who owns a concept (if anyone) but mau mau has been painting for well over 15 years and has been friends with banksy for a long time - anyway here are the pictures.. and for those who like the business heads image there are a couple of them on the street..

Yes, I remember seeing that one too. Mau Mau's website mentions a novel coming out ('The sewerside chronicles') later this year. Apparently based around some of the stuff Sewerside were up to around the turn of the century. Went to a few of their parties back then (and wicked ones too!). Right old raggamuffin crew they were! Should be a good read...
