Old Banksy In Bristol Gone, by gerry on Apr 22, 2008 20:41:28 GMT 1, Oh you're bloody joking, really liked that one, and only ever saw another one of it at the time. Reckon it had been chopped out for sale, or just destroyed by someone not realising?
(chuffed my photos are of use though!)

Old Banksy In Bristol Gone, by gerry on Apr 23, 2008 13:38:16 GMT 1, Heh, that could be it, must mention it to steve. That's the thing with the blog i'm doing, i know of about 6 or 7 early banksy stencils round bristol, and on the one hand want to record them, but if they're going to get chopped as a result then i'll think twice. We've not had this sort of chopping out in bristol before now. Could be the full moon themselves doing it though, may check, they're canny guys running it and will have known what it was, perhaps they wanted to save it.
As for when it was done, not sure, but know another one almost identical appeared up in clifton around the end of 99/start of 2000, was there when i got a photo of it in march 2000, but didn't last too long, got painted out.
Wonder how long it'll be before walls start getting chopped out for the banksy underneath the paint, then the paint removed...

Old Banksy In Bristol Gone, by trowel on Apr 23, 2008 14:03:11 GMT 1, Wonder how long it'll be before walls start getting chopped out for the banksy underneath the paint, then the paint removed... I always think that when I walk up past Clifton Wine Bar/Ten O'Clock Shop - there used to be a brilliant rat piece (couple of rats on the ground staring up to a rat flying on a propeller with a paintbrush near the top) on the walls of one of the stairways aroun 97/98 which has long been whitewashed. Couldn'd be that hard to get back to could it?

Old Banksy In Bristol Gone, by br1stol on Apr 23, 2008 15:18:44 GMT 1, I work pretty close to the alley this piece was on - and saw the guys removing it approx 3 weeks ago. A colleague gave me the heads up on what was going on after he saw 3 blokes looking at the piece, scratching their heads/chins/wallets and were obviously scheming a plan. I told him i wouldnt have thought so - it is hardly a masterpiece... Alas, i was wrong, and the very next day the boys went to work. It was a proper job they were doing - protecting everything every step of the way. They even had polystyrene blocks placed on a pallet to rest the chopped out bit of wall on. The piece itself was painted within an old bricked up window so i guess it wasnt too hard to remove... Pretty unbelievable IMO. An early one, sure - i think more like 97 myself, but i find it hard to believe anyone would pay top dollar for this even so. In fact, i think it was pretty dogged with other tags too.

Old Banksy In Bristol Gone, by They call me Stephen on Apr 23, 2008 15:22:03 GMT 1, Great to see such an early piece, shame to see it being removed for another person trying to make a quick Banksy buck
