I would never think of that... Compare a ceramic tile with a ceramic tile is exactly the same as compare a screenprint with a photocopy.

Why are Invader ceramic tiles different from the other ceramic tiles?

Well i mean at the end of the day, u are paying the money for the guy's handiwork, his thought process, his artistic merit and him thinking of doing what hes doing before you did and him getting up across the world pasting this all over. You are buying a piece of his whole artistic movement i guess.

Invaders ceramic tiles arent different from other ceramic tiles (i might be wrong?) but then again, Duchamp's urinal really isnt very different from anyone else's urinal from the 1910s.

And Banksy's unsigned prints arent printed on any special paper or use any special ink (as far as I know). B&W trollies is just that black ink on heavy stock arty paper. I could go down to an art shop and pick those up. Go to POW's website get the trollies image off there, make a little screen and screenprint it all for about £50 or less?

not a bad idea. yeah, i got an unsigned one so that i could put it up, dont really want to just display a bag. not trying to put down anyone that does like it that way, i would just rather see the piece of artwork, to each their own of course. as i did get the unsigned i see no reason to keep it in the package. i dont plan on selling it on ever, am glad to eventually have this to put up.

Like everything in this genre its about originality of idea, simple concepts that anyone could have thought of but one guy did before anyone else.

Yes you can buy your own tiles and make your own invader, but then you're copying invader. You can buy a banksy stencil off ebay for about 2 quid and make your own canvas, but i'd rather have the one banksy did....

Agree that is the idea that counts and that has value... and you must remember what I wrote before:

'I am not diminishing Invader work by any means. I love and admire Invader work'

But regarding manufacturing... does Invader has is own ceramic factory? In the end they are just tiles like others made in a a factory. The only thing that changes them is the way they are disposed and used.

This is turning into an interesting debate, which goes to the heart of what makes something art and how we assign value to it.

Firstly, I love Invader's work and think he's one of the most important artists in the street scene today.

Though I too query the value of the unsigned packs. Although, perhaps that's foolish given that they always sell out.

Before giving my thoughts on the subject (and largely because I haven't got time to post properly now), I thought I'd chuck a question out there:


1. What elements make Invader's work original and exciting?

Bearing in mind that he's essentially copying Taito's Space Invader characters in a medium (i.e., mosaic tiles) which has been used by people for thousands of years to create public pictures.

You touched exactly my point... the other is why sell them inside a signed cellophane, for more 150€, that people will never exhibit or admire (the cellophane I mean).

In respect of the second part of your question, that's easier to answer. You can unwrap the IK and frame it in a frame which has glass both on the front and back. Frame the invader facing the front side and the cellophane wrapper with signature facing the back.

to me, what makes his work interesting and exciting is the interactive 'game' he does with his art. i like how he 'invades' cities and then gives you a map to go find these pieces. it almost makes you a part of the art. i also like that he is doing something that noone else out there does. it's his style and he doesn't deviate to say, stencils, because they are/were en vogue. also, the thins he does with rubicks cubes = out of this world.

if you managed to track down the exact tiles and produced these, i wonder if you could pass them of as real Invaders,, not that i would of course just asking ?

I did have a go with some tiles and although I didnt try and pass them off as 'real' invaders there was virtually no difference at all... I cemented one to my garage wall and it does look just like the ones you see out and about!
