Space Invader shop is open!, by jackstranger on Nov 10, 2010 18:29:58 GMT 1, not a bad idea. yeah, i got an unsigned one so that i could put it up, dont really want to just display a bag. not trying to put down anyone that does like it that way, i would just rather see the piece of artwork, to each their own of course. as i did get the unsigned i see no reason to keep it in the package. i dont plan on selling it on ever, am glad to eventually have this to put up. I remember the same signed V's unsigned debate years ago with Banksy prints.. an extra 50 quid for a signature.. get outta here.. as for taking it out the pack and gluing it.. yep, remember a few people glueing their Banksy's to the backboard, sticking pins and blu tak in and on it.. The signed pack is an art object, intended to be ripped open and displayed about as much as Manzoni's "Merda d'artista", an edition of 90 I believe.
Hummm spend 150โฌ to have the pleasure of rip a signed celophane?
and I wouldn't display Merda d'artista, I prefer scented candles.

Well, you wouldn't buy the Manzoni without the packaging would you. Wonder if the debate about making your own was around in 61 ;-)

Didn't you say: 'intended to be ripped open and displayed about as much as Manzoni's "Merda d'artista'?

Space Invader shop is open!, by Strange Al on Nov 10, 2010 19:02:32 GMT 1, 1. What elements make Invader's work original and exciting? Bearing in mind that he's essentially copying Taito's Space Invader characters in a medium (i.e., mosaic tiles) which has been used by people for thousands of years to create public pictures. to me, what makes his work interesting and exciting is the interactive 'game' he does with his art. i like how he 'invades' cities and then gives you a map to go find these pieces. it almost makes you a part of the art. i also like that he is doing something that noone else out there does. it's his style and he doesn't deviate to say, stencils, because they are/were en vogue. also, the thins he does with rubicks cubes = out of this world.
I wholly agree that it's the way Invader plays with the concept of the invasion which sets his work apart. His street pieces interact perfectly with their environment and, moreover, actively engage the viewing public. As you say, we totally become part of the art/game (whether we have a map in hand or not). For me the sale of kits (and for that matter prints, books, stickers and all of the other related stuff) is simply an extension of this concept, with the artist invading our homes.
Plus, of course, they're made up of pretty colours and remind me of happy days growing up in the 80s, running to the local greasy spoon after school to stick 10p's in the Arcade Machine.
That said, would I pay 200Euros for an unsigned kit? I guess the fact that I haven't yet suggests not. Though, I can see why people would. I'm definitely keeping an eye out for the right Invader mosaic piece to add to my collection and the book is in the running. In the meantime, while I'm pondering, I'll make my own.

Space Invader shop is open!, by jackstranger on Nov 10, 2010 19:03:48 GMT 1,
Looks good...
Earlier this year I went into a Handcraft fair in Lisboa and I found a Portuguese artist that does great works with little stone tiles. I was looking to his works and I asked him, 'are the tiles made manually'? He replied, 'yes they are hand cut from stone by myself, otherwise how could I call it 'my work'?
Of course this can bring a lot of discussion, but his reply has a point. I think that what he meant was if he was just putting tiles together it would not be 'his work'.
I am sorry but I can't remember his name, if I find a link I will post.

Space Invader shop is open!, by waveydavey on Nov 10, 2010 20:48:53 GMT 1, I did have a go with some tiles and although I didnt try and pass them off as 'real' invaders there was virtually no difference at all... I cemented one to my garage wall and it does look just like the ones you see out and about!
What there are real invaders out and about; amongst us? Good gracious.

Space Invader shop is open!, by Cedric Mnich on Nov 11, 2010 17:45:08 GMT 1, For people saying that INVADER's art is just tiles... and could easily be DIY. It's probably true. BUT When I buy a IK from Invader, I simply buy a genuine one from Invader, made by him (or his assistant, I don't care). Sure, I could do it myself with 10 cents tiles (or whatever they cost) but it would not be the same in my opinion. If you go that way, Andy Warhol just screenprinted stuff on canvas : I certainly could do this myself : news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20101110/media_nm/us_usa_auction (yeah, that's a 35 million dollars bottle... Stupid ? Maybe. But do you think anyone would have believed it EVER that price if we had told them back in the 60s ?). I don't know if Invader Art will ever sell for big bucks in the future. But they are ever sold at huge prices, some of us will probably chuckle remembering people saying "do it yourself" or "200 is too expensive". Value of Art is always a subjective point of view anyway.
Except I'll never be the first one to think about it. Which makes the whole difference...
Being a parisian, I absolutely love the fact that I can walk in Paris and quickly come across an invader wherever I am in Paris. It's a real urban game. It has totally transformed my way of getting around in the city because I always look for invaders now. And buying kits certainly allows the artist to make a living out of it and make new ones, in Paris or any big city in the world.

Invader tiles used by him are probably '10cent' tiles, so why can't you use some for fun if you want too? The idea is never to buy tiles and say it is from Invader or by any means steal his work.
His art is lovely, imaginative (even if there was a thread here sometime ago that mentioned a guy in the 70s or something building invaders with tiles too) and important to the 'urban scene'. The idea of invasions is also what makes his work special. The point is why buy '10 cent' tiles that are not even signed to promote the idea/art he created? I understand his work in the streets but these selling kits should have something special and not just tiles. The screenprints have the embossed and the colours and inks makes them special too. The tilled books are really something very desirable...
I still do not see a trend line with the comparisons people are using to justify their points of view, but I find them quite interesting: 1. Banksy's unsigned 'Trolleys'; 2. Manzoni's 'Merda d'artista'; 3. Andy Warhol's 'A black-and-white Coke bottle on canvas'
From the above I confess I find Invader kits much more appealing to the eye, nose and pocket.
