Matt Small website, by Poppy Sunshine on May 18, 2008 19:08:50 GMT 1, It was a couple of weeks ago or so but it was mentioned. Good call though and really good site now it's finally arrived after a long wait. Still in the market for an original and very surprised there were left overs from the stolen from work show recently. Unfortunately they are not taking offers or I'd buy the lot. Also, not had a reply from Matt through the site but I suppose he must be busy or tied up to selling through the galleries rather than direct. Still loving his stuff as always though and one day everyone who hasn't got one will regret it.

agreed.
i don't think Matt sells direct generally. unless someone on here knows different.
There will be more stuff of his available in the next month, as Frankie has mentioned.

i think they are lino cuts on disused items, such as tv etc. so not prints.
the fridge was a mini bar, painted on two sides? that was what was in his studio anyway, so i assume its that?

litho cuts arnt really hand painted, its paint rolled and applied onto a cut litho of the negative of a face, then pressed onto a surface, there is a difference between these, and painted canvases

Matt Small website, by Poppy Sunshine on May 19, 2008 8:33:47 GMT 1, So, this litho cut method, is that different to how he normally paints his portraits then? If so, can you explain in a bit more detail please if anyone knows? Thanks. Just interested and learning.

Matt Small website, by chillpill on May 19, 2008 10:21:32 GMT 1, I'm probably not the best person to explain, but i'll try to as much as my knowledge allows.
With the lino cut, you take a piece of material like lino and scar/cut in an image into it. You then paint or roller onto the level surface, leaving the parts that are cut free of paint. When you then apply this to a surface, it creates a mirror image of paint. A bit like the old potato cut out painting technque. I think I'm right in saying that. He had to explain it to me, seeing as I've never seen it done.
With his original painting technique, that is more like painting by numbers. He will sketch out the image, then break up the image into sections, a bit like countries on a map. Then each section has paint applied and built up, using oils and lacquers mixed together i believe. Its the building of paint on top of other paint that gives Matt his signature style.
Halfway through this process, the image has a bit more of a 'swooshy' look, like wind blowing in the face, which is the best way i can describe some of the newer stuff coming from Matt. Its a variation on the theme of his original stuff and I think it looks brilliant.
Hope that helps.
Please by all means correct any parts i have explained wrong, anyone.
