New Micallef Show, by graeme501 on Oct 26, 2008 0:06:09 GMT 1, found this info lurking about the LAZ site, anyone heard anything more?
Lazarides artist Antony Micallef will this autumn unveil a series of major new works as part of GSK Contemporary, the three month season of exhibitions and related events at the Royal Academyโs Burlington Gardens. The grand, four metre high bronze nickel-plated sculptures, The Idol Kids of Today: Burger Boy, Game Boy and Weapon Face and The Beginning of the End will greet visitors to GSK Contemporary in the Burlington Gardensโ entrance portico, and a major new work on canvas from the artist, Parasite (illustrated above) will be presented in the buildingโs entrance foyer. Antony Micallef is one of the UKโs most promising young painters. In 2006 his show at Lazarides Gallery in London sold out within 30 minutes of opening, and in Spring 2007, his work graced the cover of a Sothebyโs Contemporary Sale catalogue, resulting in a bidding war and going on to sell for over three times its estimate. In September 2007 his solo show of over 50 paintings, Impure Idols, in the heart of Hollywood, sold out in under two hours to buyers including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Christina Aguilera. At once beautiful and troubling, Anthony's work examines our dichotomous relationship with consumerism, questioning how we can despise multi-national brands yet still allow ourselves to be seduced by them. He often uses the union of two opposites to make an intriguing chemistry. Micallefโs practice could be summarized as โcritical popโ, exposing the darker side of our consumerist society. In 2000 Micallef won the second prize in the BP portrait award at the National Portrait Gallery in London. In 2005 in Bulgaria he hosted the biggest international solo exhibition in the country at the National Academy of Fine Art. In 2006 he showed at the Britart/Eyestorm Milan Gallery; prints from which show were also exhibited at the British Embassy in Florence in 2007 alongside works by Damien Hirst and Peter Blake. In the same year he showed at the Arcaute Arte Contemporaneo in Monterrey, Mexico, as well as in shows Stench and Itโs A Wonderful World at Lazarides Gallery. His work was shown in 2006 alongside that of Tracey Emin and Marc Quinn in the Mystery portrait exhibition at the NPG to celebrate its 150th anniversary. Micallef was also invited to produce a limited edition print for the 50th anniversary of the Curwen Studio which will be on show in October at Tate Britain alongside work by Paula Rego. Works by Micallef are also being shown at a Lazarides group show, The Outsiders, in New York in September this year; a rolling exhibition of the same name is currently on show at the London Charing Cross space. Micallef lives and works in the UK.

New Micallef Show, by motor on Oct 26, 2008 16:51:16 GMT 1, I have seen the close ups of the 'Parasite' piece and I have to say that it is totally mesmerising. It is probably a good thing that he temporarily has fallen from the grace of flippers as now you can pick up his artwork for a bargain. If he continue to do what he's doing I am not worry about his future.

New Micallef Show, by Deleted on Oct 26, 2008 19:22:41 GMT 1, Micallef is the man. Gotta save enough for an OG before the prices go back up, cos they sure will. The man is a legend and seem's to going in the right direction is art is needed. Away from the Urban tag and into the fine art. Good stuff.

New Micallef Show, by They call me Stephen on Oct 26, 2008 19:28:34 GMT 1, For me the only link Micallef's work has to the 'street' art scene is Steve Laz. I love Micallef's work and canโt wait to see new material. His work at the outsiders show was superb in my opinion.... I wasn't necessarily the biggest fan of his Curwen print but know lots of people were. He keeps on going from strength to strength

New Micallef Show, by Coach on Oct 27, 2008 22:28:54 GMT 1, Good link thanks - very interesting looking piece. Very different from what I have seen before from AM. Interesting description of his work - "critical pop". Not sure that is how I would have described it, though clearly a lot of his work seems to comment on the consumer society, imo.

I unfortunately completely agree with your statement. Mic is great but IMO NO WAY deserving of Laz's price quotes (in the current economic situation of course).

New Micallef Show, by barry cilit on Oct 27, 2008 22:59:08 GMT 1, Painting from a photo (i.e copying) an image of a starving child numerous times and arranging them in the shape of a butterfly. That was my immediate thought! To be honest I only "saw" the shape of the butterfly about 2 minutes afterward. If he had managed to paint a beautiful butterfly image and within that portray some kind of dark suffering image then I would entertain this as being something half decent and impressive. Unless he is making some kind of homage to Hirst's portrayal of the fragility of life etc..? I much prefer his own painterly style without the photo referencing.

New Micallef Show, by snausages on Nov 3, 2008 1:38:05 GMT 1, He did a good job f**king up the flippers Huh? Actually the flippers who sold his prints immediately made out like bandits. His fans that bought those prints and held on to his prints are the ones who have suffered or will suffer major losses if they need to sell them. Hope he and laz invested all that money they made well...
