Micallef butterfly, by weeble on Nov 2, 2008 18:59:16 GMT 1, I guess it's art to shock. Personally, I think its hideous. Which is disappointing as I've always been a huge fan of his work but recently I'm not really liking much he's been putting out. What was that artist, actually, I think it was two artists, who created sculptures demonstrating atrocities of man and war - hugely detailed battlefields, encased in glass which in turn formed a swastika. They were very graphic. Well, it reminds me of that in some ways. Not pleasant to look at, but thought provoking I guess. Grim.

You're thinking of Chapman Brothers.
This work is disturbing, I'm not quite sure what he is trying to do with it. Would love to know what his thinking was behind this. Perhaps its a statement on Western thinking, the third world is a parasite, we only see them as a drain and forget the human cost of why they need the money in the first place. If so, this is a timely reminder at a time when we quickly bail out a few bankers with money we had promised to third world causes and which by all accounts is not going to find its way there anymore, just to try and ensure people start buying things again. But maybe its another meaning altogether. Still, good work, forces you to feel uncomfortable and question why.

Totally agree. I can appreciate it as a very detailed piece of art but what sort of person would have it on their wall?? Micallef's talent is undeniable and I've been a massive a fan of his previous pieces but this is most definitely not one I'll be eagerly awaiting a print release of. Lef

Micallef butterfly, by dotdot on Nov 2, 2008 20:42:19 GMT 1, Whilst i understand peopleโs view on putting such an image on the wall....
I also believe literally that art has several objectives including forcing the viewer to think about what they are seeing and why they think what they think on seeing. Mic is not (imho) trying to rub peoples noses in it - he is merely jolting the viewer into a form of shock/provocation.. which he does both eloquently and admirably.
The image above iโm sure has nothing to do with either damien nor nick. ...but certainly it draws you in then once in there you can only help but think - "oh hang on...WHAT..." - Beejoir (oops ! there really should be a new sentence there..) tried something similar with lv - though on a different perspective. Donโt forget on another level banksy does something similar, on a street level.
Which ever direction mic takes next - it wonโt be one of happiness and sweetness - that is not the direction he is coming from and therefore not a direction iโd think him going in.
