Artnet Auctions ๐บ๐ฒ, by jamesreeve5 on Jul 7, 2009 19:17:34 GMT 1, haha... figured it was only a matter of time before artnet.com looked at the internet savvy street art collectors as a way to somehow keep their all but dead online auction site going.
anyone want to take an over/under as to what percentage of lots will sell? I'll put the line at 40%

Artnet Auctions ๐บ๐ฒ, by lee3 on Jul 7, 2009 20:29:55 GMT 1, As a paid subscriber to artnet.com for as long as I can remember for both the Price Database and Market Alert with auto-renew (for what amounts to $50-70 per month if memory serves), I must say I prefer that site as a destination for information/research than pandering to me on blog sites for auctions that are arguably a tiny step above or below ebay.
Has business declined to a level that this is actually considered a wise growth idea for the brand? Further, if one holds themselves out as an art specialist website, wouldn't it be a good idea to try to make sure that your sales rates are at least in-line with the industry average (and i'm not including ebay as part of the industry)?
I'm actually stunned to see this thread and I know I'm supposed to keep my mouth shut if I don't have something nice to say but in this case I have to say I find this thread shocking - assuming the person who started it is affiliated with artnet.

That's the beauty of subscription based business models. Once they get us, we're unlikely to cancel. I barely even use part of my account (though I'd readily admit that the annual price is worth the few times that i do)....

Artnet Auctions ๐บ๐ฒ, by wizzy on Jul 7, 2009 20:58:27 GMT 1, Just that in my case Lee prices for Design are up in the air at present inc. private sellers (some need to sell while some think they are sitting on gold mines), Auction House results (which are varying wildly from one sale to the next), Galleries of varying reputations and client bases etc etc. so i find it better at the moment to sit back calmly and listen to word of mouth and what my usual contacts are saying rather than semi trust some statistics which may or may not be accurate. As you say though i will still keep up the subscription!.

Artnet Auctions ๐บ๐ฒ, by jamesreeve5 on Jul 8, 2009 0:57:45 GMT 1, Wizzy, Lee, the problem with artnet is that everyone loves paying to see the value of their art go up, but when it's in a free fall they'd rather play the ostrich with its head in the sand... myself included.
It will be interesting to see if artnet can continue the rapid expansion it has enjoyed over the previous 5 years.

Artnet Auctions ๐บ๐ฒ, by manty on Jul 8, 2009 8:10:05 GMT 1, is artnet another ebay?
How does it work, does artnet hold all the auction stock, we pay them, and then they deliver to us, making it a little more secure than dealing with zero feedback ebayers?
Or none of the above?

Artnet Auctions ๐บ๐ฒ, by john1539 on Jul 8, 2009 8:19:50 GMT 1, Hi,
I bought something through Artnet. You pay the seller the amount of your bid. Then you get an invoice from Artnet corresponding to 10% (the commission) of the bid. It's definitely more secure than Ebay because I was told that to sell through Artnet your profile needs to be checked by Artnet...

Artnet Auctions ๐บ๐ฒ, by john1539 on Jul 8, 2009 10:04:57 GMT 1, Hi Wizzy, I don't really know how the check profiles but I guess they try to select good sellers as they want to have a good reputation. For the COAs and authentication, I know the have a return policy so if you would buy a work with a problem, they would certainly deal with the seller in order to cancel the sale.

Artnet Auctions ๐บ๐ฒ, by mishco on Jul 8, 2009 10:09:03 GMT 1, those shepard fairey faces shouldn't really have screen print written below them. can they not still be bought from source for about 50 quid
edit
they're still $50 for the set of three and the starting bid is a mere $200 each. gtf

Artnet Auctions ๐บ๐ฒ, by wizzy on Jul 8, 2009 10:11:46 GMT 1, Yes i see Pascal, its a tricky one for them i think, take Banksys for example, it would have to have the right prov. COA from PC etc. and not a Vermin one or one from just any old gallery or Auction house wouldnt it?. I can also see the returns procedure being a little complicated but maybe they will just get good sellers who we can all trust! hope so.
