Guy denning burning his paintings!!!, by Martin DK on Aug 16, 2009 12:19:49 GMT 1, I would not mind one of those either. However, I think its a good idea, an artist needs to be 100% happy with the result of the pieces that goes out the door everytime, orelse it not worth it I think.

Guy denning burning his paintings!!!, by Sacked... on Aug 16, 2009 12:59:58 GMT 1, Speaking to Guy and his wife Colleen at the Signal show earlier this year he did say he was going to slow down a bit, but i did'nt think that he would burn pieces that he had already painted. We should'nt be surprised though as Guy is always been about the art and not the money he could make by churning them out. It's always good to have a clear out and start again.

Guy denning burning his paintings!!!, by packet on Aug 16, 2009 20:27:09 GMT 1, Ultimately it hurts everyone involved if the artist releases bad work. If Denning isn't satisfied with some of his work, it's better that only the best comes out.

I often find myself drawn to some of the simplest art in whatever medium as opposed to many who favor complexity or technical perfection (though i appreciate both). Further, I've found over the years that I appreciate artists that embrace their "mistakes" within their body of work and over time those mistakes to *my* eyes become some of the most powerful points of the final compositions. Just a counter take on that quote as I interpret it which could be 180 degrees from how he intended it to be digested- ie. he could well be referring to the hardship an artist must endure on the path to persuing their career which is anything but easy for most.

Guy denning burning his paintings!!!, by lee3 on Aug 16, 2009 22:57:32 GMT 1, i should add my comment had nothing whatsoever do with Denning's work which I find incredibly engaging. My response was to the quote itself, nothing more.

Guy denning burning his paintings!!!, by Heavyconsumer on Aug 16, 2009 23:12:37 GMT 1, I think it's a clear example of artistic inegrity. If Guy feels that some of the completed and/or incompleted works are in some way substandard or fail to convey he desired sentiment, I think it shows great integrity of him to detroy those works or stop them making it to market. I doubt it necessarily means that each and every mistake in execution becomes discarded. Surely some pieces don't end up exactly as they'd been conceived in the mind of the artist, but I'm not sure that's so relative this thread.

Guy denning burning his paintings!!!, by redfred on Aug 16, 2009 23:34:54 GMT 1, I know that Guy has often stated that nothing will leave his studio that he is'nt 100% happy with so I would assume its the logical way to go, if he feels he is painting better now than he was a year ago then any pieces laying around that didnt make it to the galleries do not meet present day expectations. Simples!

Guy denning burning his paintings!!!, by Daniel Silk on Aug 17, 2009 0:06:35 GMT 1, Im sure most artists do things similar to this.
If you have pieces hanging around in the studio that your not totally happy with I guess for a time they can be useful in reminding you what has and hasn't worked, but at some point you need to make a clear break, and to move forward its best to have a good clear out and free your mind for new ideas.
Guy is very passionate about his work, and probably some of the pieces that were burned might have been loved by others, but if he's not happy, its best for him to do whatever he feels right for his own peace of mind.
Looking forward to future Guy Denning shows! ;D
