Banksy โข No Ball Games GREY, by Deleted on Dec 15, 2009 22:58:46 GMT 1, What was your experience? they look niiiice in store. had some pieces framed by them, when bought from their sister gallery - compared to other pieces I have had framed the quality of their work seemed fairly shoddy - of course this maybe an isolated incident
I would say far from isolated. I spent near a ยฃ1000 to frame up some pieces, I was newish and naive to it all, and did not know what I was doing. They conned me into getting the aluminum frames, saying that the white or black box I wanted would be substantially more expensive and that the aluminum frames are much better (If only i knew what my money would have got me elsewhere!!) the framing was so crap, mounts coming away from the print, prints slipping out of the mounts, prints waving more that a mexican at a world cup and looking s**t in some cheap ass silver frame that cost the earth.... I am going to swear now... WANKERS!!
P.S.
A little bird who worked for them told me, that it cost them peanuts to frame and that is where they make all there money from. Weasel's!!
A great piece of advice that I wish I was given before I went to frame my collection:
NEVER EVER EVER use ART REPUBLIC to frame any of your art FULL STOP.

Banksy โข No Ball Games GREY, by spanksy on Dec 15, 2009 23:01:01 GMT 1, there were more than enough people willing to talk about flipping them. apparently the guy at the front in the tent was giving tips to the guys behind us about how to flip them. 3 guys around the 130/140 mark talking about ebay listing and key words. i reckon 50% brought to flip
of course people were talking about 'flipping' them as to them 'flipping' isnt a real word, they are just applying common sense and logic - "if i queue here i will exchange ยฃ500 for ยฃ1500 you cant blame Joe Public for doing this mate. if someone said to me in another non-art context i probably would jump at the chance, hey its just people being entrepreneurial.
anyway richy get back on with your work you have a big day tomorrow

Banksy โข No Ball Games GREY, by jakek on Dec 15, 2009 23:14:32 GMT 1, One person in the queue had 8 people buying prints for him, another had 4 so these numbers are low at the moment. I'm surprised that people weren't even slightly ashamed to admit this, especially considering there were obviously genuine collectors in the queue ? Sounds like it was almost a badge of honour.
Why would people be ashamed to admit this?
I think people just need to accept for many people buying, or attempting to buy, a banksy print then it is just a commodity, a piece of paper that they can buy for ยฃ500 and sell the next day for ยฃ1500. it's a margin that even a cityboy could only dream of, so we shouldn't be surprised when people have no interest in art start "investing". It's ticket touting at the next level - and even from the first photo of the queue there were plenty of people who you could imagine shifting tickets outside footy matches or concerts.
Don't get me wrong, i'm as frustrated as the next fan - the closest i've been lately in getting a print from POW was an unsigned jack and jill that i passed on. I haven't bought any recent prints on the secondary market as it would annoy me to be funding the flippers - the more people continue to pay a premium, the more people will continue to do it.
Having said that i think people need to stop whinging about POW being "fair". I think they people need to remember that they're a business - fundamentally it doesn't matter to them who buys the print. They get the same money either way, and Banksy has such an established career that the flipping won't affect him.
POW should be congratulated for doing as much as they have done to ensure that "fans" get the work; they've tried so many methods and should be given credit for that. But ultimately they don't owe us, the fans, anything.
All of the suggestions for alternative sales methods have flaws: Selling lottery tickets - someone is bound to take a punt and get a load to flog on. Although this would raise money for charity. Selling only to regular POW customers - there are a lot of artists on pow whose work i don't like and i think is over priced - should someone have to buy that in a bid to get a banksy? Online lotteries - multiple accounts for people give them a better chance F5s - certain internet connections or techno-wozardy give certain people the advantage First come first serve - people can get other people to queue to get extras to flog on. You just have to accept that if there is a grand to be made overnight people will work out how to have a piece of the action.
I'd been trying to think of a way that POW could control the sale of prints on ebay - if a proportion of the run were sold on ebay by POW over a period of time somewhere between the original price and the flippers price (with the premium over the original price maybe going to charity) then this would drive the secondary market prices down and reduce the quick flip. that said when the pow supply ran out demand would still drive prices up.
anyway, rant over - there's a world of great art out there so go looking and you'll get something even more rewarding than a banksy print on the wall.

I think people ........ .......anyway, rant over - there's a world of great art out there so go looking and you'll get something even more rewarding than a banksy print on the wall.
My point was only that if I personally were in the queue with plenty of people behind me I wouldnโt be bragging about getting everyone I could to come and buy prints for โmeโ to obviously flip.
Maybe saying โI managed to tell my friends and we will all get one, aint we luckyโ I could live with but I certainly wouldnโt be showing off that I was going to bag 4 or 8 for myself.
If I managed to round up a local homeless shelter on a bus and get 100 prints it would surely show entrepreneurial cunning but I would hardly be showing off about it at the time.
As for the rest of your โrantโ I tend to agree with it all. Iโm happy with how POW did things and I certainly havenโt complained about it or any of the flippers. Iโm not new to Banksy but thanks to this forum Iโve already spent my NBG money (and some) on some great artists I hadnโt even heard of before.
Edit:

Banksy โข No Ball Games GREY, by kunstrasen on Dec 16, 2009 10:16:06 GMT 1, I just don't get why people who did register for the Donut did not have to register again. This definitely came in nicely for all the flippers. Seeing now that many on ebay just hurts. POW should just start a new registration with each release. That way more people who actually want the print would have a chance to get it = less flipping.

Banksy โข No Ball Games GREY, by Pistol on Dec 16, 2009 12:25:57 GMT 1, Personally cant wait to see mine framed on the wall. Should be picking it up next week! ยฃ1000 profit would be far less important to me than looking at the piece hanging on my living room wall and making me grin every time I think about the fun/cold/boring/long hours/uncertainty/amusing memorable time I had in East London. I met some great people and heard some great stories. The flippers are missing out! I may even go back this Friday night just to see if I can re live the experience!

Banksy โข No Ball Games GREY, by steveh on Dec 16, 2009 17:15:29 GMT 1, Thought it was about time that instead of just reading this, I joined and actually posted having spent the night with a load of you!
Well worth it to my get first signed Banksy, and finally one at source.
Was lucky to be around a top group 90% of who were all there for the right reasons and actually wanted the print, actually turned out to be a really fun night!
Fair play to the guys who dashed down from outside London, Rob & Mark hope you made it back to Bristol & Southend quickly, and Mick, donโt think Iโd have made it though without the late night emergency the supply of chairs and sleeping bags from your missus!
Crazy passers by, and crap parkings never been so entertaining! Just hope somewhere after last weekend there were people telling friends they saw a load of crazy fans queuing for Jedward tickets on Friday night!
Hopefully a few more on here will get their hands on a green one in the next few days!

Banksy โข No Ball Games GREY, by hitme on Dec 16, 2009 19:49:46 GMT 1, I've got a question for all of you that queued for the NBG(grey). What did everyone do when they have to piss or pinch one off? Cups, buckets? Spot-saving as they went to a restroom? How about the women? Just curious. I've never really thought about queue etiquette before.
