Josh Keyes Fragment
Gallery I Solo Exhibition
Opening Reception : Saturday, Jan 16th, 7—9pm
January 16, 2010 through February 13, 2010 NEW YORK, NY (January 2, 2009) — Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to present Fragment, a solo exhibition of new works by Josh Keyes. In what will be the artist’s first solo exhibition at the gallery, Keyes continues to expand upon his signature aesthetic. Rendered in clean, controlled and finely detailed realism, the paintings in Fragment feature various wildlife species isolated within habitats that foreshadow a theoretically dystopian fate. These fragmented landscapes are surrounded by a sea of empty white space, representing the universal unknown in an allegorical interpretation of the effect of contemporary civilization’s disconnect from nature.
Through his work, Keyes often explores timely political and ecological themes which involve a deep concern for the environmental crisis our planet is facing. This includes aspects of the effects of global warming such as: climate change, species extinction, the decline of natural resources and the threat of rising sea levels. All of these issues are integrated and woven throughout the mythological fabric of the work, in a resounding visual study on causality. Subject matter suggestive of hope, healing and mortality is conveyed through the shedding of skin, exposed bone and skeletal structures, while green growth and butterflies symbolize transformation and rebirth.
The artist has said: “Through my work I attempt to examine the phenomenon of transformation, in a metaphorical interpretation of both biological and psychological change. These paintings embody an idiosyncratic vision, yet the familiar imagery allows for a connection to collective concerns, shared globally. The animals I paint personify unconscious drives and energies. The tension created when unconscious elements meet the conscious landscape is something that holds tremendous mystery and fascination for me. It is in this space that I feel free to explore the depths of archetypal and mythical potentiality. What began as a personal journey has (I hope) translated into images with emotional impact that resonate with others to question their own temporality.”
ABOUT THE ARTIST Born in 1969 in Tacoma, Washington, Josh Keyes currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon. Keyes graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and later received his MFA in painting from Yale University. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States. Over the past several years, Keyes has developed an iconic and complex personal vocabulary of imagery, creating a unique juxtaposition between the natural world and man-made landscapes. His work conveys an anxious vision of what our world might become in the future as a result of current global warming predictions. The objects and animals incorporated into Keyes’ dissected environments each hold individual iconographic significance. The artist weaves his personal mythology through painting fractured and isolated landscapes—either underwater or overgrown with vegetation. The imagery functions as a way for Keyes to express his personal experience while commenting on and sharing his interpretation of world events.

Shame the 2 prints he released from the show are all sold... That will teach me not to register my interest with a gallery!

My fave pieces from the show have to be 'Last Kiss' + 'eruption'.
Beautiful paintings that convey so much emotion.
Looking forward to his show at the David B. Smith Gallery later in the year.
Arrested motion have some good pics of the show opening here:

Josh Keyes - Jonathan LeVine Gallery - 16th Jan, by volvic on Jan 18, 2010 20:23:05 GMT 1, Poor show from levine on this. - Registered interest over a year ago for this show and received the pre sale list on thursday evening (around 12 noon NY time) Sent an email back with which original i would like to buy within 15 mins of the list going out and did not even hear anything back.
I understand keyes is a highly sought after artist but sending a pre sale list to all registered clients and only being able to for fill 10 peoples desires is bad form imo. They should move down the list individually like they do with shep, that way not getting anyones hopes up only to be let down
That aside i loved this show and lifted was my favorite.
Still lots more art to buy out there i guess.

They should move down the list individually like they do with shep, that way not getting anyones hopes up only to be let down Maybe they should move down the list? I don't know, but it's common for galleries to give preference to existing clients. But it is challenging to ever get an in with a gallery because of that sometimes. Or you wind up being offered the pieces that no one else wanted.
Yeah, I was put on the list over 2 years ago - but I never purchased anything through Levine so I probably wouldn't get it anyway but to be honest none of these paintings I need on my wall - maybe if they had a couple 12x12 inch paintings I might think about it - but for myself there's a lot of artists I'd rather own. Levine said (I think) they had 400 people on the list for this show, find this amazing, I was recently able to get 2 works by artists in the 2010 Whitney Biennial for less than these paintings (although that was a bit difficult to do tooo) and not that 10k is unreasonable for a large painting by Keyes. But to contrast what else is going on out there it still seems a bit myopic here.
But still, a nice show by Keyes.

Josh Keyes - Jonathan LeVine Gallery - 16th Jan, by volvic on Jan 26, 2010 0:53:29 GMT 1, Totally agree snausages - and I myself know full well the inside politics and priorities clients that spend high Amounts with galleries get. What left me with a bitter taste in my mouth was the email 4 days later from the gallery after putting in my 3 top choices simply stating 'sorry those pieces are sold as is the entire show' no condolences or assurance of trying to fore-fill my needs another way. I guess to levine i am a small time client but everyone has different financial constraints to adhere to. But again your right there is a hell of a lot more art out there and I would have only had 1 of those keyes on my wall anyway so i knew my chances were very slim from the moment go.

Josh Keyes - Jonathan LeVine Gallery - 16th Jan, by geoffw on Jan 26, 2010 12:14:42 GMT 1, Josh Keyes is an artists that I really don't get at all. But I'm clearly alone. Apparently the waiting list at Levine was 400 strong for only 10 paintings.
I quite like his stuff but IMO this is his weakest show to date....Self Portait in particular doesn't look great when studying the details.
When I asked the David B SMith Gallery the wait list for an original was at something like 600 people and that was a year ago...dunno if that list has the same names as Levine, or was passed on etc.

Josh Keyes - Jonathan LeVine Gallery - 16th Jan, by Bram on Jan 26, 2010 14:53:57 GMT 1, Sorry Geoffw but I could not disagree more. As a keen Keyes collector, I believe, as a whole, this is one of the strongest bodies of work. The Self portrait in particular is an amazing piece as is Last Kiss. He keeps the painting real by letting some of the mechanics show through (such as purposely letting brush strokes show.) which may explain your comment on the detail.
Each to their own and all that but to say it is the weakest show to date is going some, imo.
Re: the waiting list, IMO it's all very cliquey. Regardless of the size of the list, you will not get an opportunity to buy a piece unless you are one of the favoured few or only if one of the favoured few drops out. I had my name down on the list and didn't even get offered a print when a mate (no names mentioned) went on the list after me and got offered a print. I didn't even get a reply to my recent email which I know was read.
As far as I am concerned, if Jonathan LeVine offered me a piece in a diamond encrusted frame, hand delivered by a randy group of amazonian virgins, I would tell him foook off. Service like that is verging on arrogance.

Josh Keyes - Jonathan LeVine Gallery - 16th Jan, by BK83 on Jan 26, 2010 21:02:47 GMT 1, The show was terrific. Finally was able to pass through on Saturday.
The only let down for me was the self portrait as an old man. Whilst it had some pertinence to Keyes' overall aesthetic, it seemed to lack the unique acoustics of his animal portraiture.
Just my opinion, though.

I did get the preview email, but as I never bought anything at Levine I don't think I would have gotten anything, but that's fine with me.
I think the 400-600 people on the waitlist is a bit misleading. I'm on those lists, but honestly, I probably wont ever buy a Keyes even if given the opportunity, unless it's a nice small piece that really strikes me. I like his work alright but it's not always my cupa. I still think it's a lot of people want what they can't get here.
