Josh Keyes - Jonathan LeVine Gallery - 16th Jan, by geoffw on Jan 27, 2010 12:32:48 GMT 1, Sorry Geoffw but I could not disagree more. As a keen Keyes collector, I believe, as a whole, this is one of the strongest bodies of work. The Self portrait in particular is an amazing piece as is Last Kiss. He keeps the painting real by letting some of the mechanics show through (such as purposely letting brush strokes show.) which may explain your comment on the detail. Each to their own and all that but to say it is the weakest show to date is going some, imo. Re: the waiting list, IMO it's all very cliquey. Regardless of the size of the list, you will not get an opportunity to buy a piece unless you are one of the favoured few or only if one of the favoured few drops out. I had my name down on the list and didn't even get offered a print when a mate (no names mentioned) went on the list after me and got offered a print. I didn't even get a reply to my recent email which I know was read. As far as I am concerned, if Jonathan LeVine offered me a piece in a diamond encrusted frame, hand delivered by a randy group of amazonian virgins, I would tell him foook off. Service like that is verging on arrogance.
Indeed each to their own...perhaps looking back it was overly strong statement. Just that in previous shows I've opened up previews and almost fallen off my seat with what I saw.....this one I was little more ho-hum. Didn't hit me between the eyes like the others - not to say it's 'bad' per se...
As for the list...well yes it's been like that for a while at both galleries sadly.
