Minotaur or Peacekeeper, by verbalkint on Sept 21, 2007 2:55:58 GMT 1, neither are iconic in my opinion one is crap and the other is a parody of himself I still dont understand why they chose those works as prints. Maybe it was the first 4 they received and they just wanted to get them out of the way, but i really dont think either will make it to the top of many peoples favourite micallef, nevermind favourite print period
21st century love is iconic
these are nowhere near iconic Just my 2 cents

Minotaur or Peacekeeper, by valeha on Sept 21, 2007 3:01:11 GMT 1, i agree that neither will be as iconic as 21CL but they have their charms but for me Peacekeeper is a bit special and Minotaur reminds me of 21CL gone crazy and mutated. ooohhh i don't know!

Minotaur or Peacekeeper, by Photoxtc on Sept 21, 2007 4:18:30 GMT 1, If you saw Minotaur in person you would understand why they made a print of it, it's F**king amazing in person and HUGE...
The paintings of the UZI's were pretty amazing as well but didn't translate in print, for me anyway...
They had the prints framed at the show and they were all pretty impressive in the frame but by far IM and PK are the best...
I plan on framing mine just as they had them at the show...

Minotaur or Peacekeeper, by verbalkint on Sept 21, 2007 5:39:09 GMT 1, perhaps i have a different definition of the word 'iconic' iconic means somrthing that is standout, a real statement, something original. That is why banksy is so popular, because he did a great image, followed it with another great one, then another witty idea, then another and another. I know he has done a few duff images, or at least ones that didnt raise the bar, but with banksy you are never far from a really great idea, and you could make arguments for 10 or more of his prints being iconic
If you asked 100 different banksy fans you would probably get 25 different favourites. If you asked 100 micallef fans i think that well over half would say 21st century love (even people who dont own it) It is widely regarded, both in critical terms and financial terms as his best and most iconic work.
I hope he has not for the sake of great art, but i think he has peaked, because although i look at his work and i admit most of it is good, some of it is great and i would consider buying one of his originals, i just cannot help thinking that there are a couple of artists that are just blowing micallef away right now, namely Adam Neate and Ian Francis.
This year was always going to be a great opportunity for everyone in this art scene, what with banksy saying he was taking the whole year off and doing absolutely nothing. His thunder was there to steal and whilst he will come back next year and get it back in a heartbeat, for me 2007 is the year when Adam Neate blew everyone away and the year when Ian Francis made everyone sit up and take notice. then again last year at this time the big buzz was all about micallef and his show at laz. The bottom line is he raised my expectations because he is such a talented artist, i was just expecting something really special, something amazing. It just didnt work for me.
but each to their own, if you love his work then great, it was just all a bit predictable for me

Minotaur or Peacekeeper, by Existencil on Sept 21, 2007 22:49:02 GMT 1, I saw some truly iconic images amongst the LA show pics.
None of them were LAZ prints.
One of them was a POW print.

Minotaur or Peacekeeper, by endtimes on Sept 22, 2007 12:30:33 GMT 1, Peacekeeper vs. Minotaur? Definitely Minotaur - but Peacekeeper is interesting because it's kind of a unique work in Micallef's oeuvre. This won't be his MOST iconic print of course but I think Minotaur will still be iconic, and the only prints I like better are WCiP and 21CL and maybe the laz Bomber Girl. But I personally don't like the early hfung etc, japanese inspired micallefs hardly at all. The Minotaur print is amazing and the jpegs sent out don't do it justice. The detail is superb and even on the litho it feels like if I were to brush my hand across the print the chalk would wipe off. Top notch printing job!
And my definition of iconic, and image that defines an artists, something that someone sees and will easily recognize as the artists signatue works.

Minotaur or Peacekeeper, by endtimes on Sept 22, 2007 12:38:34 GMT 1, And we all have our own opinion but as far as Micallef vs Adam Neate vs Ian Francis. I still think Micallef is leagues ahead. I think Ian Francis is an amazing Draughtsman but his work lacks conceptual impact with me, I think he's absolute top notch illustrator but totally not convinced about it's impact as "art." And Neate, he is good and has some great stuff going on in his work conceptually and artistically but it fails to truly blow me away and I don't think it is or was quite as unique or as original as Micallefs work. I think the problem with this Micallef show with some is like the rock band syndrome. If they change their sound some people will hate them if they keep doing the same thing some people will hate or get tired of them. Just the way it goes. But only a limited number of artists can really pull off changing their sound or art well. Maybe Radiohead and Damien Hirst, but it's a small group.
It will be interesting to see how these artists age though...
Wil they live hard and die young or keep going?
