I bought a canvas which was subject to VAT and the bill was half what I was expecting, the only conclusion I could come to was the VAT was payable on the gallery "mark up". I have since seen other gallery pieces where the VAT quoted doesnt equate to anywhere near 17.5%, it would be interesting to find out the ruling on this!
