BANKSY WAS NOT HERE
I kept a sharp eye out for the unwilling Jack Vettriano of the street-art movement, Banksy, at a sellout group show at Elms Lesters Painting Rooms in Soho. Nobody else seemed to notice his absence. Itโs boom time for street art, and the bigger question is: should we pay establishment prices for a slither of counter-culture? โI was sceptical at first, but now I canโt get enough. This guy is superb,โ said one middle-aged collector, gazing in wonderment at a ยฃ75,000 framed cardboard cutout of a man in a paint-splattered sweatshirt, by rising star Adam Neate. Across the room, two art students sat on a sofa eyeing up a work by someone called Dalek. โTaggingโs whatโs important,โ said one. โItโs about reclaiming public space,โ said the other, looking down at his Reebok Classics sadly.
