Eyestorm Exeter - Thursday Micallef, by slowmo on Apr 23, 2007 16:38:50 GMT 1, Following on from CBL's original heads up, you lucky so and so's down in the west country. Popped into Exeter Eyestorm on Saturday as I was visiting the in laws for the weekend (they live in Sidbury, just out of Sidford).
I think the chap who runs the place is called Paul, a really really nice fella. Told me how he invested heavily in Micallef and six months ago was really beginning to worry that he was gonna lose out big time. Anyway he was getting ready for the show and had a lot of the prints to show (not all for sale, expensive those that were, but so tempting having never seen them in the flesh). Three originals have been done for this show (all portraits) again unfortunately all sold.
Someone take some photos!

Eyestorm Exeter - Thursday Micallef, by corblimeylimey on Apr 23, 2007 17:03:59 GMT 1, I'll go and see in the next day or two, he said earlier that it would be invite only (I guess for the preview) and I've emailed and spoken to him and he said no problem, but haven't had anything in the post.

Eyestorm Exeter - Thursday Micallef, by corblimeylimey on Apr 24, 2007 12:37:26 GMT 1, I now have my invite and hopefully will be there on opening night, so I'll take plenty of pics if allowed.
The exhibition runs until 26th May, so any one who can't/didn't get an invite or can't make the preview evening have plenty of time to come down and visit Exeter, for those that are out of the area and want to come down and make a weekend out of it I'd recommend Hotel Barcelona ( www.aliashotels.com/flash.php?hotel=barcelona ) which is only a short walk away from the gallery.

Eyestorm Exeter - Thursday Micallef, by swedishgirl on Apr 24, 2007 14:30:42 GMT 1, Is this a proper Micallef exhibition or is similar to the Banksy one at the Andipa Gallery in London? Will there be any new prints for sale? I thought he was connected to the Laz gallery now?

Eyestorm Exeter - Thursday Micallef, by slowmo on Apr 24, 2007 16:09:39 GMT 1, I would guess that the Exeter Eyestorm is being used as the owner there has a real passion for Micallef, knows him and that Micallef used to study there (university of Plymouth, but in Exeter).

Eyestorm Exeter - Thursday Micallef, by buddings on Apr 24, 2007 16:32:12 GMT 1, i know this is biased as im from exeter but its very rare that we get stuff like this. i mean every band who plays the uk plays at least one night in london, the closest they come to exeter is bristol if we're lucky. its the same with exhibitions in a way, up in london was the faile show, andipa, santas ghetto.....etc etc etc etc.
you guys may be dissapointed but for us south west folk its almost always dissapointing.
ps. i do agree it SHOULD be in london aswell seeing as its the capital

Eyestorm Exeter - Thursday Micallef, by dkla on Apr 27, 2007 17:54:13 GMT 1, Thanks buddings - very cool of you to do that for us! ;D
Is it just me, or when looking at all of these together, do you get the feeling that Micallef is a bit overrated as an "artist that's gonna last"? I know it's supposed to have the opposite effect, but for me, I'm seeing a lot of played themes -- a lot of "art clichés". The guns, the corporate logos, the corporate logos with guns, the cartoons...we've seen it over and over.
I know you might be thinking: "Banksy has used guns, he's used corporate icons". True, he has. But much more limited and arguably in a much more insightful, meaningful way. Just look at CND or Napalm - there's so more more imbedded meaning there to interpret than, say, "21st Century Love". Banksy is timeless and yet completely on the moment of what we need to see/realize behind the curtain of our media-driven society.
By the way, I mean no disrespect to the hard-core Micallef fans -- I like his art. I'm just throwing out there that seeing them all together is actually having a negative effect on my perception of his art. Curious to see if others have the same POV...

You'll like it here, Exeter's got 2 Wetherspoon pubs ;D The Imperial is the better of the two, but if you want some advice I'd go to the Hour Glass Inn (EX2 4AU)
Might bump into you I'm planning on going to the gallery tomorrow.
Thanks for the pics Buddings

The guns and corporate logo's are all gonna be played out sooner or later, I guess if he stays the distance, then this will become just a "period" in a larger body of work that develops more depth. His portraits are stunning and there seems to be more pathos and depth in one of them, than in all the others put together.
The suck lovers study that just sold at auction, and pardon my french. here. I thought was shit ! a study ! someone's been rightly "sold" that one.. it looked terrible.
I'd like to commission a big fat painting or two from him.,love the technique ! but was never 100% sure about the prints and never bought (when they were cheap too)..No regrets... yet

Eyestorm Exeter - Thursday Micallef, by goffy on Apr 27, 2007 19:24:11 GMT 1, I also don't agree with dkla, I just think that the images are now so familiar that they are not having the same effect as when some people first saw them. Although I have 3 Micallef prints and I love them.
