Matt Small, by artyfarty on Mar 19, 2007 10:03:51 GMT 1, Newly registered so please be gentle! I just wanted to say how disappointed I was with the pricing of the Conor Harrington print at LazInc. I'd been looking forward to it for a while. It is really beautiful but with the VAT it's around ยฃ850. Out of my league so as a result I went to Leonard St and bought Matt Small's "Terry". I'm not sure if he's been discussed a lot on this site but the print is stunning. I'd thoroughly recommend a look at one in the flesh. Also, the Elbowtoe pieces at Leonard St are worth a look too.

Matt Small, by johnas on Mar 19, 2007 10:23:44 GMT 1, welcome to the board artyfarty.... don't worry, MOST of us don't bite
there have been a few discussions about MS. Check out the Black Rat Press thread and the Dan baldwin one (assuming you have a spare hour or two!)
i think the general consensus of MS is that the quality is really good in the flesh

Matt Small, by dotdot on Mar 19, 2007 11:44:23 GMT 1, Matt Small's is something to be seen close up...
For the moment it is quite difficult to reproduce that kind of work.
I think blackratpress have prob carried out an amazing job in what they've attempted for the prints they've produced.
However when you see any of the pieces at eleven - the whole image takes on a different dimension.
..
.. and of course - if only i had the money too i'd have bought an original.

Matt Small, by azlan on Mar 19, 2007 12:42:22 GMT 1, Although it's not the largest of prints, the craftsmanship and quality is superb! The printer would have been close to suicide after printing that many separations... (I'd imaging a high number of prints ended up in the bin due to technical problems too)

Matt Small, by ABC on Mar 19, 2007 14:29:49 GMT 1, Artyfarty, I agree totally, MS is a superb artist and his latest print is a work of art itself in regards to the screen printing process undertaken by Black Rat Press

Matt Small, by mcmcmc on Mar 19, 2007 14:34:04 GMT 1, How much was the Matt Small print? Are they still available at the Eleven show? I was on a flight to Cape Town when the preview was on (hard life I know) and presumed everything would have gone.

Last time I looked you could buy a Connor Harrington painting from Stolen Space for ยฃ3,000. Which either makes the print expensive or the canvas cheap!

Matt Small, by ABC on Mar 20, 2007 0:02:30 GMT 1, And a few at Laz's for a half decent price. The thing is, after the CH show nothing happened with prices, that in turn didnt create that "Jump on the band waggon frenzy of buying" unlike the likes of AM, Faile etc etc. I think CH's originals are amazing and may see if I can sneek a peek at the print. What it does do is keep the baggers out but it also isolates a lot of geniune collectors of this style of art with the prices that high.

Matt Small, by owl on Mar 22, 2007 0:18:08 GMT 1, 1st contribution...
I agree with arty, & others, who've picked up on Matt Small - I think the man's a real talent. I write as someone who's fortunate enough to own an original & a Terry print.
However as with most artists/musicians/writers etc some stuff they do you really like and some you don't and he's no exception, I haven't bought Saul as I just don't like it. I also agree with the general view on here that the quality of Black Rat prints is superior to many others but surely it's the image that's got to be most important??...I couldn't give a monkeys how many colours are in it or how much weight the printer lost 'pulling it' - if it's a sh*t picture, its a sh*t picture (unless you're a trader I guess).
IMO the same applies to the Conor print - if you like it that much it's worth the price! Personally I'd have gone for an original but my walls aren't big enough/wallets not fat enough to pick up my favourite stuff by him (academic as they sold on the preview night anyway, but I'll save that rant for another day).
