OBEY, by darjeeling on Jan 14, 2008 3:35:20 GMT 1, Yeah, it's almost worth spending $1-200 extra on ebay and not wasting 5 hours of your life. But I guess a great deal if you can somehow get a print quickly. It's harder than getting a Banksy imo.

OBEY, by darjeeling on Jan 14, 2008 14:00:38 GMT 1, I could find issue with Shepard Fairey and his art. But 'stealing' copyrighted imagery isn't one of the. They guy pulls from sources and twists things into part of is own vision and vernacular, just like many great artists and designers have.
What I have issue with is the consumerism and rampant capitalism that his business has turned in to. And also selling pretty posters asa means of activism I think is pretty weak and not meaningful. etc.
But that said, he has done some really beautiful work and murals and has made significant impact.

OBEY, by gozgoz on Jan 14, 2008 14:06:14 GMT 1, yeah that was the arugument i used to use myself i.e. that he uses the imagery and twists tings into his own vision etc etc but in that article.. when u see the originals he rips off... i realised how little "twisting" there was. it was almost as if he lifted the image wholesale.
my two cents anyways. so since then, its nomore Obey tee shirts for me.

OBEY, by darjeeling on Jan 14, 2008 14:32:39 GMT 1, Yeah, but this argument goes back to Marcel Duchamp calling found objects art, and plenty of contemporary artists too. I mean warhol is the king of ripping stuff off and did much less personal manipulation to that which he ripped off than Fairey does. Same goes with Rauschenberg, Lichtenstein, and many others that I can't name right now.
Talent borrows, genius steals... Even Einstein is ok with it, although I'll have to say Fairey it doesn't seem hasn't been that great at hiding his sources... The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources. - Albert Einstein

OBEY, by bonesy on Jan 14, 2008 15:11:12 GMT 1, My big beef with that article was that the writer went to the Obey show and supposedly only came away with "oh my god! these are all stolen images!". Shep's large murals and "fine art" pieces are amazing in person, the writer obviously went there with an agenda.
