What was your favorite riot? , by otomi on Apr 8, 2008 22:17:44 GMT 1,
Mine was Mainzer Strasse - Berlin. 3000 cops 5000 rioters - went on for a week. The police "evicted" a whole squatted block in '91(?). It was the end of an era. West Germany established law and order in East Berlin. There were two years were everyone could do everything he wanted to. I think you had some good ones in London too.
P.S. How do you get the video in the post?

What was your favorite riot? , by They call me Stephen on Apr 9, 2008 9:56:33 GMT 1, The Brixton riots of 1981 have to be up there too. (although I was far too young then to understand what was going on)
English society seems a little too flaccid to riot anymore; the French on the other hand put us to shame (if thatโs the right word)
I love photos of riots, thereโs something very beautiful about them. People fighting for what they truly believe in, a social uprising against the system.

English society never has really been one for riots - I think this passage from George McDonald Frasers Flashman novels examplifies the English attitude to riots and the contrasting French attitude nicely.
The Scene: London - Chartist rally - 10th April 1848
But it poured down, everyone was soaked, the foreign agitators who were on hand got nowhere, and all the inflamed mob did was to send a monstrous petition across to the House of Commons. It had five million signatures, they said; I know it had four of mine, one in the name of Obadiah Snooks, and three others in the shape of X's beside which I wrote, "John Morrison, Arthur Wellesley, Henry John Temple Palmerston, their marks".
But the whole thing was a frost, and when one of the Frog agitators in Trafalgar Square got up and damned the whole lot of the Chartists for English cowards, a butcher's boy tore off his coat, squared up to the Frenchy, and gave the snail-chewing scoundrel the finest thrashing you could wish for. Then, of course, the whole crowd carried the butcher's boy shoulder high, and finished up singing "God Save the Queen" with tremendous gusto. A thoroughly English revolution, I dare say.
And long may it continue ;D

What was your favorite riot? , by qprfc1967 on Apr 9, 2008 19:46:45 GMT 1, how can anyone be proud of a riot , brainless cowards who think theyre the beesneez , cool and tough cos they can throw a brick , bottle etc at a copper on a horse 100 yards away and when they get a whack want to moan about police brutality . why no trouble when 1/2 million demonstrate for country alliance, poll tax , mayday , stonehenge rioters if they love it so much just go and support the away team at ninian park every fortnight, stand as close to the home supporters as poss and spend ninety mins abusing them go outside and see how tough you are

Was going to write at length about class struggle, the disenfranchised and the abuse of power by the ruling elite but will settle with calling you a cock instead...
My favourite? Well, since you ask, most of the miners struggles...

What was your favorite riot? , by danvnuk on Apr 10, 2008 11:28:28 GMT 1, I'm also wondering how you could have a 'favourite' riot - a peaceful demonstration maybe, but a riot in my mind involves people getting hurt (on both sides) property smashed, innocent bystanders being terrified......what's to celebrate about that?
Surely by stating that this or that riot was your favourite - your stating that you revel in the mayhem and violence involved, rather than the no doubt legitimate grievance that caused the riot in the first place.
Perhaps I'm just arguing semantics.

What was your favorite riot? , by GD303uk on Apr 10, 2008 12:22:29 GMT 1, peacefull demonstrations can end in a riot, perhaps we should clarify what exactly is a riot, anti fascist marches have ended in riot, suffragettes even rioted to help get woman the right to vote blacks rioted in anti racism riots in america i dont think people set out to riot it happens as a response/ reaction to actions beyound their control the Petterloo masacre is an example of a demonstration ending in riot, although the riot act was not read it could be argued was a riot. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peterloo_Massacre
even ramblers on kinder scout did not set out for a riot it was the authorities whos use of violance ended in riot, this is sometimes the case for the cause of riot. although Peterloo was a tragic day it was days like this that gave us rights we enjoy today. thus is one of my favorite riots.
