Logan Hicks 🇺🇸 Stencil Artist • Photographer • Street Art, by motor on Jul 5, 2008 17:57:47 GMT 1, whilst i appriciate the skill Logan Hicks has, i wouldnt want his work anywhere near my walls. for me there just isnt any substance to it and for this reason i believe that Banksy is the 'king of the stencil'.
Same here. Great skills, not enough substance for me.

i have this hanging on my wall and it replaced a piece of paper by banksy that was worth the same amount. i prefer the logan hicks original over a piece of paper that banksy possibly breathed on for no more than 4 seconds.

Logan Hicks 🇺🇸 Stencil Artist • Photographer • Street Art, by Zippy on Jul 5, 2008 22:39:32 GMT 1, the guy is a genius. Think of the time it takes him to cut the stencils. Its offensive to sit behind your computer and say 'it looks like photoshop' when you havent gone to see it in the flesh. This comment could be made against all of the artists we like. In fact, with photoshop and illustrator you can create / replicate almost anything. Logan is a top artist so please show the man some repsect.

Logan Hicks 🇺🇸 Stencil Artist • Photographer • Street Art, by slowmo on Jul 5, 2008 22:50:11 GMT 1, It is a very good show, lots of nice work. Couldn't help feeling though that the work would be better suited to public spaces, like an office reception or if you had a holiday villa. They would look great in passing, on inspection they also look great, but essentially you admire the effort rather than the result, its a short term high.
Had a really good debate over the Banksy vs Logan at the preview, Banksy won for me as I still look at some of his far simpler pieces in wonder regularly, they just make me think. Logans stuff is brilliantly executed, but they are just that, nicely executed photo's painstakingly made into stencils.

Logan Hicks 🇺🇸 Stencil Artist • Photographer • Street Art, by jusdeep on Jul 6, 2008 8:35:42 GMT 1, I also spoke to Logan about the stencil side of things and he did let it slip that the majority of the stencils he used nowadays were laser-cut. I imagine quite a few artists use this method.

yes, i should know better considering we have 5 laser etching machines at my work. that's why i went for an earlier piece of his as i prefer the odd imperfection. it's also a reason why i didn't buy one of copyright's skateboard decks.
as for the ads, well i guess google needs get back some of the money they spent over the viacom lawsuit.

To be honest, I dont think too many artists do. I used to admire Logan for his determination and patience, but if this is true, hes no longer on my wanted list.

Logan Hicks 🇺🇸 Stencil Artist • Photographer • Street Art, by atomone on Jul 6, 2008 12:04:35 GMT 1, I went down to BRP on Thursday lunchtime and Logan was painting the large image of the people walking forward with the red background, I got some shots of him painting it and his stencils were laid out in piles, amazing details, great guy to chat to and he did confirm that the images were created on a computer and then laser etched, sounds easy, but his vision and the result that he gets from them are amazing! I didn't buy anything but can appreciate the work gone into them, computer aided or not.

Logan Hicks 🇺🇸 Stencil Artist • Photographer • Street Art, by slowmo on Jul 6, 2008 12:18:13 GMT 1, some artists might not use lasers whatson but it still doesn't mean they cut the stencils themselves. The skill is not in using a scalpel really is it, most able bodied people can use one. the skill is having the vision to be able to turn an image into something that can be used as stencil.
This shatters my opinion, take a photo of a building, street scene, or tube, stick it through photoshop, get it laser cut, choose suitable colours. Its paint by numbers isnt it? Really disappointed about this, I went to the show with two friends who work in design, both of them argued he did not cut the stencils, I said that was what made him special. How wrong I was, this is now ikea canvas level work priced very highly indeed in my eyes.

Logan Hicks 🇺🇸 Stencil Artist • Photographer • Street Art, by jusdeep on Jul 6, 2008 16:11:37 GMT 1, Just because the stencils may be laser cut doesn't mean it's an easy or quick process and as a couple of the posts above mention, 'it's the vision of turning a complicated scene into something workable as a stencil and then combining colours and techniques to make it hold together as a finished piece'. Some of Logan's stencils are huge and extremely complicated. Getting a body of work ready for any show is a task-and-a-half, I'm sure any labour saving device is a must and in my opinion doesn't distract at all in the finished piece. The only thing I could question about the show was that a few pieces were tiled and weren't lined up (visible joins) and a couple didn't work perspectively in the larger pieces. All in all a very good show although not to all tastes, which I totally understand.

Logan Hicks 🇺🇸 Stencil Artist • Photographer • Street Art, by manchestermike on Jul 6, 2008 16:47:05 GMT 1, I'm very surprised if this is the case. I always considered a huge part of the skill in being the cutting of the stencil manually. Taking the cutting skill away takes a huge amount from the works. I appreciate that manual cutting takes a long time... I know Klingatron spends over 100 hours cutting each unique 31 x 83 cm piece... then destroys the stencils after!! I can't agree with jusdeep that it doesn't detract from the final piece... maybe it doesn't from the image itself, but overall it'd be a big turn off for me.

Logan Hicks 🇺🇸 Stencil Artist • Photographer • Street Art, by jusdeep on Jul 7, 2008 1:41:53 GMT 1, You may be right Mike, although I wasn't discrediting artists such as Klingatron who cut their own, I have nothing but admiration for the amount of hours that go into some stencils. But in the end it all boils down to if you like the work and want it on your wall, not if a laser cut stencil was used.

Most artists don't use laser cutters and there is a definite skill in cutting. Photoshop is a tool and not everyone uses tools in the same way which is why you have such a diverse range of stencils.

Logan Hicks 🇺🇸 Stencil Artist • Photographer • Street Art, by jackson.earth on Jul 7, 2008 9:41:50 GMT 1, i went down on thursday - and thought the images were incredibly dull, offensive almost, in that here was a man who clearly had the technical skill so why treat us like idiots and produce a collection of some of the most uninteresting images ive ever seen.. and now i'm hearing about laser cutters, so essentially there's even less skill - which unfortunately means his work is dull and anyone with photoshop and a laser cutter and a few days on their hands could do the same - but hopefully they would use an interesting image to photoshop
i must stress this is only my opinion, and i'm sure there's loads of people who will disagree with me - quite why i don't know - but they will.
he uses layers, upon layers... yawn.

Logan Hicks 🇺🇸 Stencil Artist • Photographer • Street Art, by jynormous on Jul 7, 2008 9:51:14 GMT 1, Ok, i will solve this issue once and for all.
I was down at the Cans festival tunnel on Sunday with my camcorder and saw Logan there. I had a chat to him and he did say that today he mainly uses laser cut stencils.
He takes a photo (or 3 bracketing them) of a subject, then uses Photoshop to make the layers, then converts that file to a vector image using the Live trace function in illustrator. Then he sends the image off to a company who laser cuts the sheets for him.
He still does cut stencils by hand for smaller / original work, but for bigger street pieces he uses the laser cut method.
When he said this, i must admit i was a little disappointed. He then told me that the shipping company he used for the cans festival lost his stencils so he just rang up the laser cut company and they cut another set for him and shipped them overnight so he could still paint.
I think an artist is someone who creates the image they want to share with the world. All he is guilty of doing is streamlining the process and removing some of the man hours.
Warhol did it, why cant Logan!
Also, can i just add that Logan is a great guy. He was more than happy to take some time to talk to me about his work despite being on holiday with his family.

I wondered why they were quite reasonable prices.
