Great skills, not enough substance for me.

there are loads of artists work that i would prefer on my walls than most if not all banksy prints (although i wouldnt turn my nose up at most originals). i was saying that i think banksy is 'king of the stencils'. i wasnt talking about prints more street work.

Here are some pictures that I took at the show. I took them on my phone so apologies for the quality, they really don't do the pictures any justice!

I thought that the show was amazing. I really like Logan Hicks work and it was good to get the chance to chat to him.

The picture with the people in it walking along the street was the star of the show, it looked beautiful and the detail in the stencil is amazing and it has an almost metalic effect on the surface and the patterned sky which you probably can't see on the photo.

I also loved the photographs available but would probably always choose a stencil over a photo.

He had also just finished (the day of the show) a supersized version of this picture and had also done the same one on the wall in the outside part of cargo. You could still smell the paint!

I don't know what time the show opened but by the time I got there there were already lots of red stickers and many editions had already sold out.

A great show well worth going to see if you have time.

Think of the time it takes him to cut the stencils.
Its offensive to sit behind your computer and say 'it looks like photoshop' when you havent gone to see it in the flesh.
This comment could be made against all of the artists we like. In fact, with photoshop and illustrator you can create / replicate almost anything.
Logan is a top artist so please show the man some repsect.

LOL. I always looked at his work and thought of his cut fingers and all the hard work involved.
Now i'll think that he had to make a phone call to the laser cutters.

I also spoke to Logan about the stencil side of things and he did let it slip that the majority of the stencils he used nowadays were laser-cut. I imagine quite a few artists use this method.

I went down to BRP on Thursday lunchtime and Logan was painting the large image of the people walking forward with the red background, I got some shots of him painting it and his stencils were laid out in piles, amazing details, great guy to chat to and he did confirm that the images were created on a computer and then laser etched, sounds easy, but his vision and the result that he gets from them are amazing! I didn't buy anything but can appreciate the work gone into them, computer aided or not.

Just because the stencils may be laser cut doesn't mean it's an easy or quick process and as a couple of the posts above mention, 'it's the vision of turning a complicated scene into something workable as a stencil and then combining colours and techniques to make it hold together as a finished piece'. Some of Logan's stencils are huge and extremely complicated. Getting a body of work ready for any show is a task-and-a-half, I'm sure any labour saving device is a must and in my opinion doesn't distract at all in the finished piece. The only thing I could question about the show was that a few pieces were tiled and weren't lined up (visible joins) and a couple didn't work perspectively in the larger pieces. All in all a very good show although not to all tastes, which I totally understand.

You may be right Mike, although I wasn't discrediting artists such as Klingatron who cut their own, I have nothing but admiration for the amount of hours that go into some stencils. But in the end it all boils down to if you like the work and want it on your wall, not if a laser cut stencil was used.

I'll disagree with you on that comment. Most artists don't use laser cutters and there is a definite skill in cutting. Photoshop is a tool and not everyone uses tools in the same way which is why you have such a diverse range of stencils.

Ok, i will solve this issue once and for all.

I was down at the Cans festival tunnel on Sunday with my camcorder and saw Logan there. I had a chat to him and he did say that today he mainly uses laser cut stencils.

He takes a photo (or 3 bracketing them) of a subject, then uses Photoshop to make the layers, then converts that file to a vector image using the Live trace function in illustrator. Then he sends the image off to a company who laser cuts the sheets for him.

He still does cut stencils by hand for smaller / original work, but for bigger street pieces he uses the laser cut method.

When he said this, i must admit i was a little disappointed. He then told me that the shipping company he used for the cans festival lost his stencils so he just rang up the laser cut company and they cut another set for him and shipped them overnight so he could still paint.

I think an artist is someone who creates the image they want to share with the world. All he is guilty of doing is streamlining the process and removing some of the man hours.

Also, can i just add that Logan is a great guy. He was more than happy to take some time to talk to me about his work despite being on holiday with his family.
