SICKBOY on Stella Dore, by bmjt on Sept 9, 2008 17:39:49 GMT 1, No chance, the middle one actually has artistic merit. Left is just his symbol we've all seen many times before and the right hand side one is meaningless, he probably did in about 3 minutes.

SICKBOY on Stella Dore, by bmjt on Sept 9, 2008 18:11:01 GMT 1, Um, yes I do like art of the 'street' variety, although it's like saying I like 'dance' music, some of it I like, some I don't, the key operand therin being my personal opinion which allows me to guage my taste and personal aesthetic affiliations. The middle piece is far superior to the other two, in techincal ability and aesthetic prowess, to my eye that is. The other 2 fade in comparison to weak rather trite pieces with little effect beyond that of 'trademarks' and symbols which he has become famous for, not for artistic ability which the middle piece encompasses brilliantly.

so are you buying into it because its street art, or because you admire the artistic merit of the piece or Artist?
To say you like most of it, is sort of like saying, I like books or films or music.

I buy things I like ;D
It has to say something to you, it makes no difference if it has taken a year to paint or its just a splat of paint on a piece of paper that has taken one second to do.

SICKBOY on Stella Dore, by Guest on Sept 9, 2008 18:59:07 GMT 1, fair enough, I go along with your way of thinking
I can also admire an Artist, without thinking everything they produce is great.

Spot on! They dont all hit the mark 100% of the time. But also time spent on a piece and the Artists skills with a brush or whatever dont even register with me.

SICKBOY on Stella Dore, by bmjt on Sept 9, 2008 20:23:13 GMT 1, Essentially the first and third are only of interest because of who did them, and what that represents, whereas the middle one stands on it's own two feet as a solid piece of art, which isn't restricted by the street moniker. There's nothing new in 1 + 3, they're nice to look at, no issue there, but they're pretty shallow, and as I iterated earlier, represent not much more than symbols/logos of the artist himself and indeed go no further. In phenomonolgical terms, I think your taste has been altered and ultimatlely provoked by who did it, not what it really looks like, whatever that may be.

SICKBOY on Stella Dore, by dslug on Sept 10, 2008 9:16:15 GMT 1, I agree with anyone above who has said the middle one is the best of the bunch. The thing about the other 2 and where I disagree with bmjt is that maybe some people want the symbol or thing that represents the artist they follow.
Some people want the sick boy temple, some want the dface wings others the banksy rat.....all 3 are kind of gimicky and Id bet that for each of the above named artists there are people here who wish the artist would quit using it and others who cant live without it.
Its great to hear everyones opinion on things but the thing is everyone see things differently and it doesnt make anyone right or wrong.

SICKBOY on Stella Dore, by bmjt on Sept 10, 2008 10:10:37 GMT 1, I don't think you're disagreeing with me that much dslug, you say that the temple is a pure representation of the artist, much like d-face's wings. That's pretty much what i'm saying, the temple symbol is Sickboy, given it's proliferation, that's all it really represents now: the man himself, his logo, and people want that on their wall, to show their admiration for that and what he does and has done.
My argument is that in my opinion a piece of art should be able to represent itself without having to depend on referring to it's artist to be valid, which 1 + 3 most definitely do. If people like the temples and some text, thats absolutely fine, but i'm just trying to highlight the difference between the two artistic faculties, i.e. That number 2 doesn't rely on references to the past, but has it's own unique artistic agenda, and is far richer for it.
