Thailand, by willywonka on Mar 31, 2010 15:53:59 GMT 1, Can anyone give me any advice on Thailand.
Looking for any info on :
- Cool places to stay
- Interesting things to see
- Amazing hotels
- Fun things to do
- Where to get clothes made and good shopping (Mrs Wonka)
- etc etc
Taking the good Mrs Wonka to be and we want to do it in real style whilst also getting chance to really appreciate the real Thailand.
If anyone has any personal experiences they can share and guide me in the right direction for any of this it would me massively appreciated.
Cheers, WW.

It's quite hard to get off the beaten track in Thailand so if you want to see the real Thailand, the best way is by motorbike. I did a 2 week circular trip around the north - starting and finishing in Chang Mai. You can make a loose plan of where you want to go but I had the most fun when I came across interesting little roads/paths that wiggled up into the mountains and decide to have a look where they went... Doing it this way you can come across mountain villages where westerners rarely go and your arrival is treated with such surprise that the whole village comes out to see you - you usually always get a very warm welcome. You can't really see these parts of Thailand any other way.
Island-wise Koh Tao is very nice and not too touristy (or at least it wasn't when I was last there 6 years ago...

I have been three times. A great place is Chiang Mai in the North, great night market there and cheap suits to be made.
In Bangkok, the Mandarin Oriental serves amazing food and very affordable, having said that, you can eat amazing food in the streets too there...the best about Thailand IMO is food!
If you want to go south, on an Island...avoid Phi Phi, Samui, and the rest, unless you crave to be surrounded by chavs.
Try instead Koh Lanta, it's one of the last beautiful islands that has not been spoiled by full moon parties, sex tourism, etc...
Really, trust me KOH LANTA is amazing. The people are sooo friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed, food amazing, beaches great.
Hope that helps, otherwise PM me with questions!

Thailand, by monkeyart on Mar 31, 2010 20:56:59 GMT 1, I've a nice place which I would be pushing if it wasn't rented :-) !! It depends on your budget really, the Oriental or the Peninsula are great in BKK but quite expensive, when I go I like to stay at Bel Air Princess just off Sukhumvit which has great night markets and my favourite bar in the world on the corner...anyway its great value and if you choose to upgrade (which I would recommend) you get free drinks between 6 and 8 I think :-), its also only a couple of stops from Siam Square which again your missus would love. Another must see if you around at the weekend is JJ or Chatuchak market which is easy to get to on the sky train or metro from Bel Air with thousands of stalls with real bargains but its hot!!! In the evening definitely go to the top of the Banyan Tree hotel near Patpong for a cocktail or the new Vertigo! There is soooo much to do PM if you'd want a bit more info as I don't want to bore :-) As for the rest of Thailand I've not travelled that much, I would recommend the Rayavadee in Krabi, been there a few times, its quite expensive but just f***ing amazing, if you go hire there boat for the sunset cruise... amazing! As mentioned my house is in Hua Hin which is lovely and feels more like a small local town if you know where to avoid, there are a few newly found islands, if that makes sense such as Koh Tao and Koh Pangan. I've not been but meant to be amazing... And it all depends what you want, hope this has sort of helped. Also be careful when you go, seasons are odd in Thailand... thinking about it Luang Probang in Loas is worth a visit if you get time. Thailand is an amazing place... enjoy!!

Thailand, by stopki on Mar 31, 2010 21:09:00 GMT 1, Personally I stay in the bankok mariot as it's nice and it's a bit outta the centre
u can get a boat from the centre or a cab or a tuk tuk.
And I agree koh lanta is or was heaven / paradise haven't been there for a while.
U have to get a plane to krabi. Then a taxi across on a river ferry . To lanta hence the lack of tourists.
But it's worth it. Enjoy

Thailand, by willywonka on Mar 31, 2010 21:14:53 GMT 1, Cheers guys. It all sounds good so far. I have done a little bit of research and will give a brief outline of what I was thinking. We are going in January and will have a pretty good budget and want to stay in nice hotels.
Fly to Bangkok and stay there for 2 nights. Fly down to Krabi and chill out on a nice beach in a bit of luxury. Have been told Koh Lanta is nice so will look into that more and see if I can find a great hotel for a good price. Travel over to Phuket for a few days to do some tours and trips etc. Fly up to Chiaing Mai for a few days to do some trekking and touristy stuff. Back to Bangkok for a day or so before flting home.
niktektonik- Like the idea of getting some suits made. Is it expensive and how long does it take? Also any tips on Koh Lanta hotels?
monkeyart- would be great if you could pm me some more details of good stuff to do in Bangkok.
Neither of us have been before so definitely wanna do all the touristy stuff but not overly keen on being around loads of westerners getting smashed all the time. Although everyone raves about the shows in Patpong and have been told it's a must see.

Thailand, by monkeyart on Mar 31, 2010 21:29:07 GMT 1, No worries I'll pm you when I think, I personally would avoid getting suits made in BKK or Thailand as whole, rough and expensive, also don't let the taxi/tuk tuk drivers talk you into it or the bloody diamond shops. I'll have a think sounds like a busy trip.. enjoy :-)

Best is to ask around without rushing it. Some hotel concierges can help (even though a few are on commission). Just check. In Koh Lanta, I stayed with my girlfriend in two different places. One called "Andaman Lanta" and the other called "Moonlight Bay". Both you can stay for 50 quid per night or less in a very decent bungallow, with view on the sea, gorgeous place, seriously amazing. Check this shot of mine from the beach: www.flickr.com/photos/niktektonik/3365440391In Bankgkok, I stayed twice at the Narai hotel. It's great, very well located. My dad also used to stay there when he worked as cabin crew for Air France. Voila! Nico
