Is Banksy a sell-out? (Discuss), by froz on May 4, 2010 18:20:06 GMT 1, Man that kid said it all... we are putting him up so high because of all the elitists purchasing his work. It works the same way with clothing, if a famous person is wearing it, you better believe everyone else is going to try to jump the trendy band wagon.

Is Banksy a sell-out? (Discuss), by speebe on Jun 20, 2010 23:37:20 GMT 1, From the rosta of artists linked to the term 'Urban Art', just look at how many have worked with established brands such as Nike, Adidas, Prada, LV, PF Flyer etc on commercial products.
OS Gemeos Faile Nick Walker Dface Dave the Chimp Futura Lee Quinones Futura Kaws Shep Fairey Stash Haze Beautiful Losers - Group? Cope2 Mr Andre Adam Neate Saber Dalek Eine Keith Haring- Via Foundation Basquiat- Via Foundation Warhol- Via Foundation Murakami + many more
The only commercial line I'm aware of that banksy has released was with British Designer Griffin, for the 'Wrong War' T-shirts and sweat tops in 2001/02. No doubt profits were going to charity too.
I know there was a muted release for a Banksy shoe by Puma and although I've seen some photos (samples?) they never went in to production.
Despite the commercial success of brand Banksy I think he's been the most detached from big brands and has resisted more than most from cashing in or selling out.

Is Banksy a sell-out? (Discuss), by Heavyconsumer on Jun 21, 2010 1:53:35 GMT 1, Doing a commission for Cowell negates the point, though. I'm right. No discussion necessary.
Judging by your posts in this thread, with all due respect, you are unikely to be right about anything much at all and should probably not be allowed near a computer, lest you do serious damage to either yourself or others.

Is Banksy a sell-out? (Discuss), by andyctree on Jul 22, 2010 18:41:28 GMT 1, I completely disagree. Is Banksy just an artist for hire? Will he do anything for money? If so, we should disregard his street art's social value. All those stencils done in Gaza would be meaningless. Criticizing Tesco would be hypocrisy. Is Paris Hilton getting a painting as well? Banksy would stand for nothing other than business as usual. Simon Cowell is the definition of cultural rot. Sadly, American Idol represents how low America has sunk. So it matters. What excited me about Banksy is that his work made you think. It was bigger than the establishment. The themes mattered and it was for a greater good. If all Banksy wants is to make money, then he's Damien Hirst. It matters.
You know Simon Cowell's entire purpose is to put out popular music aka Pop. His intention is to promote music popular culture likes. Why don't you go buy an early Beatles album and try and tell me that it isn't Pop music.
Who gives a shit if Banksy gets paid to sell something to Simon Cowell? You just sound bitter like Simon Cowell told you that you couldn't sing, and now that Banksy is associated with him in some way you want to group the 2 together.
Was America great before Simon Cowell?

Is Banksy a sell-out? (Discuss), by kjzimm on Jul 23, 2010 3:39:14 GMT 1, You're all sell-outs. We're all sell-outs. That's the nature of our economic system. Eine sells his art. Warhol sold his art to anyone. Freerange sells his artistic abilities to advertisers. We all sell our abilities to others so we can buy beer and art among the other necessities. So fcuknig what! Because he makes more than average...is he a sell-out? What if he's blatant, but doesn't sell much--is he a sell-out? What if he needs to pay rent? Sell-out? Get over it! We're all sell-outs if we're not bumming from someone or living off the land. Would you rather be a bum, a farmer or a sell-out? I'm thinking most of you choose the latter. IMHO, selling out is a good thing. Some other moron is buying your sh!te!
