Re: Jose Parla | Holly Thoburn, by graywolf1968 on Mar 29, 2010 15:59:26 GMT 1, Dear Holly Thoburn,
After reviewing your work on various sites, and reading as much as I could about you online, I could not escape your obvious influence by the internationally known New York based artist, Jose Parla.
www.joseparla.com
I find it very odd, that none of the articles or your interviews achieve to mention or acknowledge your study of this artist.
It's a shame really. Your work would advance with such a great reference to his achievements; however, to someone educated and informed as I am; a serious art collector, I can only see you at present as a member of artists that belong to the Bandwagonism movement; a copy cat group of unoriginal artists in the category of that other unoriginal in France, Jon One.
So called "Urban Artists" that think they are doing something new.
I hope that you are able to cope with your plagiarist like counterfeit art and search your soul for some true originality; do you have your own finger print?
Expand on Jose's work. Acknowledge your source, that's the right thing to do.

Sincerely,
Gray Wolf U.K.

For me, I can clearly see the differences in Holly and Jose' works. I'd add Marco 'Pho' Grassi to your list if I thought it were true. However, again it usually comes down to interpretation and as said in my first couple of lines, I[/u] can clearly see the difference. Doesn't mean I expect others to.

Joking aside I'm willing to listen - I just don't see Holly as necessarily directly influenced by Parla

Re: Jose Parla | Holly Thoburn, by lee3 on Mar 29, 2010 17:01:49 GMT 1, I'm guessing this isn't exactly the kind of response Gray was looking for. I have to agree with the responses thus far and wonder who would be on the receiving end of a similar letter ~50 years ago when Warhol, Lichtenstein & Ramos were all painting superman. Glad we didn't admonish any 2 of them for producing "counterfeit art".

Re: Jose Parla | Holly Thoburn, by origo on Mar 29, 2010 17:04:08 GMT 1, Cy Twombly was painting this style long before Parla, really lacking knowledge this mail.
I bought two pieces from her before introducing her work to Frankie (the rest is history), and actually confronted her with Parlaยดs work. She had never seen or heard about it, but she admitted that there were some similarities.
I personally think that Hollyยดs work come of much rawer than Parlaยดs. While Parla has a more fine line edge in his work, I find that Hollyยดs work might as well could have been taken straight down from a wall, and that is what I like about it. The edge and the rawness.

Re: Jose Parla | Holly Thoburn, by jmarksartco on Mar 29, 2010 18:43:40 GMT 1, She does nice original work. She is clearly NOT a banwagoneer as way too many crap players in this game are. All artists are influenced by their peers. What is unique about her and Parla is they bring a raw "2010" update on abstract expressionist era drippers like Norman Bluhm, Sam Francis, Twombley.

Re: Jose Parla | Holly Thoburn, by lumbo on Mar 29, 2010 20:30:13 GMT 1, I always think of Pollock when I see a Parla, but when you look much further there's a huge gulf of difference; the same with Thoburn and Parla... you could say the same for Blek and Banksy (or the million others who followed him); Neate and Picasso (well, kind-of); Micallef and Bacon; Brainwash and... erm, I'll get back to you...
Dear Greywolf1968... after viewing your comments... I think you need to go back to 1968...

I dont see his reference in hollys work! Hers is far 'mistier'. Perhaps this can separate the structure of their style! Im looking forward to seeing more work from these two!

As you were...

Re: Jose Parla | Holly Thoburn, by jusdeep on Apr 1, 2010 15:58:48 GMT 1, I have also spoken to Holly in the past about her work and as Origo already mentioned she had no knowledge of Josรฉ at the time. She has been painting for well over a decade and her work is more based on urban decay than combining this with type/graffiti or mixed media forms such as Parla uses. Totally different up close and there are quite a few artists mentioned previously that have a similar style or subject. Really not clever digging this whole who copycat thing up again, it's been done to death on the forum. Actually, I just noticed an Ease tag on one of Holly's 12" pieces for the single homeless project, I presume a shout to Josรฉ or just a freakish coincidence?
