Dan Baldwin π¬π§ New Print Release β’ Art For Sale, by irf2112 on Feb 27, 2007 20:58:19 GMT 1, Just had a look at Dan's work at Opus again - precisely what I'm not after. Its not clever, its not even asthetically appealing. It states on the site, "Inspired by the 17th century Vanitas movement". When I read/hear anything like this, I just think, "what a load of bollocks". Its pretentious at best. I'm not in the school of thought whereby art that looks as if its been done by an 11 year old is cool.... He may well make it big, then again he may not. In the words of P.E. "Don't believe the hype"...

Just by looking at the poll at the start of this thread, you can tell peoples views are very split.

Dan Baldwin π¬π§ New Print Release β’ Art For Sale, by rolyateel on Feb 27, 2007 21:41:58 GMT 1, When are we going to get any decent prints? so far what has been available is surely not his best stuff?
i agree that his prints have not been particularly good...puppy love & burger king did nothing for me....but che is a fantastic image - a fresh look at the stadard che image, and has humour in it too
you really have to see his street art before you condemn him - it's excellent

Dan Baldwin π¬π§ New Print Release β’ Art For Sale, by reados on Feb 27, 2007 22:08:57 GMT 1, What a great thread, lots of healthy discussion ;D,
in my opinion Dan Baldwin is an artist he spends time creating images and his processes are what make him special, the final image not be to every body's taste and perhaps its not just the final image that people have been buying into.
Dolk and Elus' creative part is in the percieval of an actual idea and they come up with strong images that are easily reproduced as a straight screen prints.
your maybe trying compare two different types of artists ie. sculptors and painters.

Must say I agree, you kind of need several heads to follow things these days, street art/urban art & graf related head ala Eine, Invader, DFace, Dolk, Banksy etc. Then the graphic/illustrator head for Insect, Lucy M, Obey etc. The your contemporary art painter head for Micallef, Baldwin etc..
Very blurred boundaries between them all, which I find really interesting and it will no doubt throw up a lot of passionate debates on all sides . These boundaries have been theoretically done away with for years, but how long it will take, or if we'll ever truly see the more conservative world of fine art embrace these changes en mass or wether we want them to even, remains to be seen.

Dan Baldwin π¬π§ New Print Release β’ Art For Sale, by slowmo on Feb 28, 2007 0:52:13 GMT 1, The blurred boundaries can only be a good thing. These are creative times, lots of work coming out that really is great by a lot of different people. Everyone must be sparking off one another at the moment. By mixing these different mediums some awesome stuff can happen. Would really like some of these artists to wrok together and see what happens, although not all artists can work collectively.

Dan Baldwin π¬π§ New Print Release β’ Art For Sale, by mcnuts on Feb 28, 2007 17:24:01 GMT 1, Now this is proof of trying to cash in on hype if i have ever seen it. The lister doesnt even get the description correct and he/she says she has it in hand? Comes with a plastic Spider? Come on. If you are going to flog it, get your details right!
Item number: 150096684827
Didnt take long for politics to end up on the bay though. Mine isnt even here yet!

How much were they being sold for originally? It'll be interesting to see how much over that it goes for, then we can gauge how much the forum hype is worth

makes sense. though the "politics" prints were priced low on purpose. So it will be interesting to see if its value is deemed by the bay to be on par with the cost of buying a "full priced print". I must admit, I'm quite excited to get mine though I wont be able to afford to frame it for a while.

Don't underestimate the stupidity of some ebay folk, I've seen stuff go for higher than the same item on a BIN many times.

What seems odd to me about Art Rep is that the politics print has a higher BIN price than some of the other Politics F**k-up single prints. Perhaps b/c its a two for one.
Hey.. there's an idea..... sell your politics and individual prints!

Dan Baldwin π¬π§ New Print Release β’ Art For Sale, by stuey09 on Feb 28, 2007 18:40:14 GMT 1, I think DB's work proves a point that in most cases people buy art because they like it, not to invest in cash cows. If his work was shifting purely on hype, then is it not the case that some of the, aherm...weaker prints (yes okay, the Dog print) would have been snapped up in the hope of making a profit. Because a lot of prints have not sold out it tends to suggest that quality rather than hype has been the prime motivator for the buyer.

Dan Baldwin π¬π§ New Print Release β’ Art For Sale, by finsburyparkranger on Feb 28, 2007 19:03:30 GMT 1, Looks like the legendary Art tout (a-clockwork-tortoise) has really got his knickers in a twist in his recent sale of a Dan Baldwin mini print (?). He said ...
The man they couldn't hang!Apologies to anybody who was watching this before it was removed by e-bay[apparently listing it with a Micallef flyer is still considered spamming, seller beware] Why they have paid so much attention to the Dan Baldwin items in particular is a matter of conjecture, however i think those upstanding guardians of moral decency who i shall refer to only as THE BANKSY POLICE,may well be behind it.Bravo I say, jolly good work all round you chaps.Keep it up,there must be hundreds of other items with various flyers attached to them on e-bay at the moment. Now to more pressing matters. On offer a signed and titled Dan Baldwin mini-print.A message of hope".
Ok so whats this guys story? We know he used to push Banksy stuff on ebay and was notorious for pulling the print before it was sold. I speculated (as is do) that this may have been an attempt to increase the perceived price of Banksy's art (shill bid then pull the sale so your other account will not have to cough up). however he has moved from wholesaling Banksy art and now deals in Baldwins. Here he is saying that it is ebay getting heavy for including the name of other artist in the listing? Which may be reasonable but would require someone to complain.
Which begs the question. Has any members of the forum been grassing up clockwork? No probs if you have. He's no better than a football tout. But could he really be telling the gospel this time?
PS I think politics is a really nice colorful and unique print and have bought one. Although i think Dan needs to be carefull to not become greedy with his pricing. Any artist that is trying to remain 'street' loses respect (in my eye's) when they try to charge more than Banksy would for a screen print.
PPS Sorry Banksy for accusing you of Shill bidding. I did apreciate the recent ratty "lies" stencil outside sotherby's.

Does that mean Micallef has lost 'street' cred for charging Β£4000 + VAT for his last batch of prints

Dan Baldwin π¬π§ New Print Release β’ Art For Sale, by bldouble on Feb 28, 2007 21:59:42 GMT 1, rightly so. One of the reasons I'm looking forward to getting my Politics print over most other prints is because of the workmanship (I have heard) that has gone into making it and the affordable price of 150 quid for two.
