Dan Baldwin 🇬🇧 New Print Release • Art For Sale, by irf2112 on Feb 27, 2007 11:20:46 GMT 1, i love dan baldwins work. i think its deceptive in being colourful and bright on first looking but has possible deeper meanings if you look for them. The flowers and skulls (in the divine reveleations yellow skulls for example) that some people say look like wallpaper or clothes designs to me reprent life and death and the little insects crawling between them represent disease. The print to me shows the delicate balance between life and death. Any art with seemingly random images provokes the viewer in varying ways. I am very pretentious! The more i look at dan baldwins work the more i get out of it.
I could say a turd on a stick represents waste - from there I'll move onto how we're all wasting the worlds resources. From there I'll say we've moved onto the resource of oil from there we've moved onto George Bush... Who is a turd....
BTW - Levi's we're doing a gimmick around 10 years ago where they were shooting their jeans with 45 magnums and the bullet(s) would come with the jeans...

Dan Baldwin 🇬🇧 New Print Release • Art For Sale, by slowmo on Feb 27, 2007 11:27:30 GMT 1, Seems like a fresh Peter Blake to me, collage style work but using more paint than image cuttings (although there is collage work in it as well). Colours are a lot bolder, messages are in there but left open to interpretation by the viewer, so it means something different for everyone.

Dan Baldwin 🇬🇧 New Print Release • Art For Sale, by romanywg on Feb 27, 2007 12:29:56 GMT 1, Dan Baldwin's work has a sinister yet beautiful feel to it and deals with topics such as vanitas, politics, religion and innocence. He incorporates graphic symbolism with pop elements to ilustrate the fragile line between good versus evil. In throwing together opposing elements, he creats a poetic, chaotic and conflicting juxtoposition of life and death. How do I know this you may ask. 'Cos it's all there in black and white on the blurb for his new exhibition.

Dan Baldwin 🇬🇧 New Print Release • Art For Sale, by corblimeylimey on Feb 27, 2007 14:28:38 GMT 1, I posted this in the 'Forums Influencing Sales?' thread but feel I need to air my thoughts again because I truly worry people are just buying s**t for the sake of buying; or just following anything that is posted like a herd of sheep. "Not sure about you guys, but I'm tired with a lot of the 'street/stencil' art currently out there. Sick of seeing hyper-surreal characters, and the following subject matter: gasmasks, guns, skulls, angels & soldiers. While I love me some Banksy, think my tastes are going back to more artistically talented art." Is anyone else feeling the same??? I also wish I was a stock broker bc I'd just post recommendations here and make a killing
I don't like all the street/stencil art but that's where my main interest is, if you're going towards the 'fine-art' side of things there's nothing wrong with that.
You say "going back to...." how long have you been into art? am I right in assuming you were into fine art before street art

You are right. I was into more fine art before finding this wonderful niche. It does resonate with me, but I just feel that it isn't as fresh as it used to be.

Dan Baldwin 🇬🇧 New Print Release • Art For Sale, by gordy on Feb 27, 2007 20:00:22 GMT 1, I take back what I said about Dan Baldwins dog print ;D ;D ;D
It is nowhere near as bad as Dolks 'puppy love', 'burger king' or 'che' ;D ;D at least it has some originality!!!!!
If Dolk is such a great artist, as some people seem to believe on this forum, when can we expect some original stuff?
I'm guessing that we will get some sort of montage of the picture of the girl tennis player scratching her butt from the seventies next !!! hopefully I will be proved wrong!!!! ;D
Titifreaks, faile and blek's stuff is the most interesting and best quality around at the moment. ;D

Dan Baldwin 🇬🇧 New Print Release • Art For Sale, by ziggy on Feb 27, 2007 20:33:45 GMT 1, I've been reading this thread with interest so thought I'd add my thoughts. Dan is producing lots of work to a constistenly high standard, his prints are by far the best quality and most lovingly made prints I own. His original works are just stunning in the flesh too. I really can't compare him with the likes of Dolk, Eelus, etc who have lived off the back of one or two very average prints.
I can appreciate his work won't suit everyone but you can't deny the guy has talent and is a 'practicing' artist unlike a few POW artists who sit around doing nothing which we ever see.

His street art is definitely better than his prints IMO. Just do a search on Flickr... I think an artists' originality should be judged collectively (street work + print work; after all, Dolk is first and foremost a street artist), not just by the prints that have been released.
Even so, I think his Che is pretty original. To be precise: I think that the idea is original, not the usage of Che. If you think that Dolk's Che is unoriginal just because it's another variation on the cultural icon of Che, you might as well apply that argument to Banksy's Che with Dollar Sign Glasses image as well. Originality, to me, includes taking an existing idea and putting a new spin on it. The mere usage of the image (e.g. Che's portrait), as long as it's not reproduced blatantly with no creative input, does not constitute as "unoriginal". At least, that's what I think

the last remarks were about the dolk prints....while he may be a very talented street artist, his output in prints is pretty average. Obviously some people don't agree with this....... that is their opinion just like this is mine.
that's art for you.... ;D ;D ;D

I think it is quite myopic for people to judge a street artists' work merely by the prints he/she has released. We have to remember that people like Dolk or Eelus or Nick Walker are first and foremost STREET artists... and there's just so much to street art that can never be translated effectively on paper and a frame. I view the prints that they release as collectible "souvenirs" from the artists. Sort of like going to the Empire State Building in New York and buying a miniature Empire State Building paperweight. What should the focus be on, the actual gigantic building itself, or the paperweight/keychain/fridge magnets?
Not having a go at you, ziggy... just voicing my opinion. Absolutely zero offence intended
