BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by RPM on Apr 13, 2010 14:56:01 GMT 1, I will post a few of the photos I took from last night's opening, but most were similarly captured (and in much better quality than my crappy iPhone) on AM. Needless to say, pretty much every artist and art gallery owner in L.A. (as well as Jonathan Levine from NYC) were in attendance. Too many "famous" people to name, but it was nice to see Danger Mouse and James Mercer of Broken Bells. FYI - the mustached cop was the lead singer from the band Local Natives, if you are familiar with them.
The theater was gorgeous and I wish I would have grabbed some of the Banksy money that the AWR/MSK threw out at the crowd from the balcony. If anyone did get an extra, please hit me up.
To be honest, I may be the first person to say this, but I did not love the movie. It had its moments, especially the footage of the street action. But in the end, I came away with a feeling that both Shep and Banksy are expressing a bit of sour grapes. After doing what they have done for so long, and putting so much blood, sweat and tears into it, here comes this MBW guy who the public immediately takes to.
They both struck me as a couple of bullies trying to belittle the nerd that, until recently, had been their friend. The only mistake the nerd (MBW) made was to imitate his friends and <shock> become (arguably) more popular than them. Anyhow, I honestly left liking Banksy and Shep a little less than when I walked in.
Well worth a watch and I'm glad I was able to see it. But maybe my expectations were too high.
Just my $.02

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by streetartisdead on Apr 13, 2010 15:40:19 GMT 1, think you missed the point rpm it wasn't about belittling but pointing out the absurdity of the art world, also the criticism was somewhat tongue in cheek. Having said that I agree that Exit isn't the work of genius some would say it is.

No, I understood what the "point" was supposed to be. It just wasn't what I took away from the film.
Anyhow, here's some photos that I took on my iPhone:

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by aspyhole on Apr 13, 2010 16:26:54 GMT 1, Nicely put rpm. Not enough criticism of the film.
While obviously Banksy, Shepard, Invader, André, etc. are all big players in the scene, there was no mention of the extent that the "scene" had grown over the years from NYC train artists, etc. and expanded all over the world. I felt that Banksy was suggesting that he was the centre of the whole street art world, and that all the artists know each other and make up some sort of exclusive global network. Obviously this is not the case. Anyway, I suppose those artists were the only ones that MBW had footage of. I suppose it was just a shame that they concentrated on him and his footage so much - but that was the point wasn't it.
But, regarding the premiere, wasn't MBW there himself!? Also, good to see Joaquin looking a bit more normal!

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by RPM on Apr 13, 2010 18:26:16 GMT 1, "Park" is on Broadway. Head north on Broadway from Olympic and you can't miss it. The theater is further up Broadway just before 6th.
