BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by Daniel Silk on Jan 23, 2010 0:29:28 GMT 1, Do people really think this film will make it into the cinemas in the UK?
Will it just have a few special screenings at selective cinemas, and then go straight to a DVD release?
What do you thinks gonna happen with this film over the coming few weeks?

It's interesting that you should post that, cos I have been thinking today about this, but from quite the opposite perspective. banksy is huge in the UK - a household name, i would say. So, I was wondering how mainstream the film will be in US - presumably, not very. And how mainstream it will be in the UK - I would have thought more likely to get into the mainstream cinimas. So, will the film be shown in multiplexis in town like Northampton? Or only in arthouse theatre in London (and other big cities).
Also, I was wondering about how well known Banksy is in America now. I remember about 18 months ago (or so - memeroy is shit!) Jef Aerosol talking about this, and Banksy being unknown in France (I think - my apologies Jef, if that isnt right). I was wondering if our American cousins could tell me how well known Banksy is there now. I am guessing not a household name, as he is verging on being here - but preumably better known now???
I was also thinking, old hat I know, how much I would like to see a piece go up similar to "americans working overhead", which is one of the funniest of B's pieces imo.

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by Daniel Silk on Jan 23, 2010 0:55:33 GMT 1, Good post Coach
I wonder how well known Banksy is over in America compared to Shepard Fairey and Mr Brainwash? I would imagine most people in America know Shep to the same level as people in the UK know Banksy, but it also seems Brainwash has been getting a good bit of coverage in the US this year, so might be more well known than we realize.
Any American members able to give us an idea on that?

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by nex on Jan 23, 2010 1:20:45 GMT 1, So are people thinking the plan is/was for all the flippers to buy up Mr Brainwash work, and then release this film that will show the whole thing is just a joke? The problem with that is nobody is really in control of how a stunt like that will go down with the public It might well work, but it might just as easily back fire sending Mr Brainwash values rocketing and damage Banksy To me its all looks a bit risky.
you'll have to explain to me how awful work suddenly becomes worth alot whilst thought provoking creative humorous work, who's just drawn huges crowds to a museum all Summer and continues to draw in more and more fans will somehow diminish? Because he's edited a film that will provoke ppl to realise how easily manipulated they are, by greed?

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by cadeallaw on Jan 23, 2010 1:38:35 GMT 1, In the US midwest, out of Shep, Banksy and MBW, i'd say that Obey clothing is the most popular. In fact, I'd guess that about 99% of the people who wear Obey clothing have zero idea who Shepard Fairey is or that Obey has anything to do with art. After that, I'd say that people recognize the Shepard Fairey 'Hope' image, but don't know anything else aside from that image. A distant third would probably be Shepard Fairey as an artist.

Depends on who you ask. Banksy is not a household name like he is in the UK. Seems as if everyone young and old know about Banksy in the UK. In the US I think he is known but by no means well known. People with an arts interest know but outside of that not much.

I can't speak for the bigger metropolitan cities, but in the south and in the midwest, relatively unknown unless you have some sort of interest in contemporary art. Put it this way, of the people I know, prior to hearing me yammer on and on about Banksy, I'd say maybe two of my friends or acquaintances knew who Banksy was before my introduction of him to them? e.g. I have a buddy who took an art history class at a local community college here in Dayton, Ohio last semester and his professor had no idea who Banksy was.

I would say that less than 1% of the USA population would know who Banksy is. Fairey.......probably 5-10% and mostly because of the obama print/coverage.

It also might be that, regardless of whether you like it or not, his images are more geared to a massive American audience. A large number of Banksy's images are geared toward a UK audience with themes/concepts that will not translate to the masses in the U.S.

but also,i'd like to think this whole MBW thing passes off into the ether with no notice whatsoever, cos i dont own any MBW cos i think his work is gash.

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by kjzimm on Jan 23, 2010 2:58:18 GMT 1, I was wondering if our American cousins could tell me how well known Banksy is there now. c
In my household he's a household name, but I tried my skills and have a rat painting the numbers on the curb of my house. I may try more around town, but that's not my bag, so I hope I don't. But, I'm seriously tempted.
Anyway, back to the subject, my British friends and their parents all know B. I've met one person, in Alabama, that knew of him before mentioning. Some others in LA that I would guess 20% had a clue.
He's still obscure here, but growing. My kids love his s**te! They've enlightened their friends. There is another generation coming!

BANKSY Film "Exit Through The Gift Shop", by kjzimm on Jan 23, 2010 3:16:48 GMT 1, Good post Coach I wonder how well known Banksy is over in America compared to Shepard Fairey and Mr Brainwash? I would imagine most people in America know Shep to the same level as people in the UK know Banksy, but it also seems Brainwash has been getting a good bit of coverage in the US this year, so might be more well known than we realize. Any American members able to give us an idea on that?
I'd say Shep is known more on the left in America. The right doesn't give a crap about him if they're not into art. Mr Brainwash is considerably less. I have to admit, I never paid any attention to his art until this thread. I knew of him, but he never registered as worthy of my money. Now that I've seen his stuff and it has registered with me, I still don't care. Lazy art! If MBW is Banksy, Banksy's stock has lost value in my book. I'm more inclined to go with the Morons post a few pages back--we're f'in morons to buy some of the MBW stuff.
I'd say in the misplaced minds of America the rank of those 3 are 1) Shep 2) Banksy distant 3) MBW

I'd say in the misplaced minds of America the rank of those 3 are 1) Shep 2) Banksy distant 3) MBW I think a lot of this depends on your locality as well. Here in Las Vegas, I hear chatter about MBW just as much as I do about Fairey or Banksy. The context isn't always the best, but his art is recognized. Especially the Life Is Beautiful imagery. I am pretty sure it has to do with the close proximity of Los Angeles. It is also less politically infused than Banksy and Fairey, so it's easier to swallow for the "non-art" crowd.
As far as Banksy, plenty of people know him in the states, and he is quite respected. These three artists are probable the most recognizable at this time, but I have a hunch Brainwash is about to hit pretty big here in the states. Afterall, he is more pop art than street art at this point.
