Another example of Banksy at his best. Not just making the location/environment an integral part of the piece, but as someone mentioned on another forum yesterday with regards to the "Take That!" tree piece, and the "You concrete me" piece, he just sees art where other people don't. This is what makes him a genius imo.

Banksy in Detroit, by rowan on May 11, 2010 12:21:55 GMT 1, That new tight rope rat is just brilliant... 10/10 for effort!
I wonder how long it takes him to execute something like this? Does he spot the location, fire up photoshop or what ever method he uses, churn out the stencil, and return to put it up in no time... Considering the amount of time he must be in a location before his work goes up! He must work darn quickly...

Banksy in Detroit, by mattgold on May 11, 2010 17:30:48 GMT 1, Will be back home in Detroit in about a week. Excited to check these out.
I'm sure there are more not yet discovered. Too much terrain ripe for Banksy that many people would never notice.

Banksy in Detroit, by Greekboy on May 11, 2010 21:36:54 GMT 1, Could not believe that Banksy hit up Detroit. Went out first thing at 6:00 in the morning before work to see if I could find them. Lucky that I did, since you can see that the process of buffing the Diamond Girl piece is already underway. I doubt it's still up there now. A shame that it couldn't last longer. I guess it will be coming to an ebay auction in the near future.

Banksy in Detroit, by Greekboy on May 11, 2010 22:38:14 GMT 1, The rat isn't going anywhere. It's on the side of a factory on a major street with tons of traffic, even at such an early hour. Hopefully this weekend, I can find the large piece at the abandoned factory.

Banksy in Detroit, by eddiedangerous on May 12, 2010 8:10:03 GMT 1, got thi flickr mail this morning but the photo that goes with it was removed before I could see it, and I presume it must be the girl with diamond...
"You don't know me, but I live near not far from where this piece was done. Anyway, the wall was going to be destroyed by scrappers within a week. So, a friend and I reached out to a local grassroots art gallery, and they decided to save the wall. They mobilized a crew, and worked for hours to preserve the wall. It won't be sold; they will frame it and display it at their gallery in the city. I believe they plan on inviting Bansky (although I wouldn't imagine he would be interested in showing up - maybe anonymously though?)...
Just thought I'd let you know, this great piece will be saved... I can let you know the details of the display when they are done if you're interested."

Banksy in Detroit, by Greekboy on May 12, 2010 12:36:24 GMT 1, That's great. I tried contacting the Detroit Institute of Arts but no one returned my call. I'm just happy it won't be sold on ebay as many pieces before it. Please give me the details when you have them. I would love to see it again.

They have pics of the piece being removed from the old packard plant
Looks like it was taken for "preservation" by the 555 gallery. To be honest im glad it was taken by a NP gallery and if it gets more traffic to their place so be it. As long as they don't sell it.
Plus it doesn't look too safe to be hanging out over there lol.

Banksy in Detroit, by mattgold on May 12, 2010 14:38:21 GMT 1, The Packard Plant has a lot of history - even after they stopped rolling cars off the lot.
In the early days of the 'Rave' scene, the Packard Plant was a frequently used venue for parties. I recall seeing many DJs and Rappers there who now headline events like ULTRA, DEMF (Movement), Global Gathering and other 'Electronic Music Festivals'. Although my personal taste has changed, it's nice to see Banksy give a nod to this specific building and the historical relevance it has to both culture and counter-culture.
IMO, MOCA(D) would have been a better call then the DIA. But then again, too much red tape for either of them I'm sure. Im not personally familiar with 555 Gallery as my personal favorite gallery (C-Pop) shut down a few years ago after I had moved to Miami... but I give them a pat on the back for making the effort and preserving the work.

C-pop closed last year. Tristan Eaton had the last show i think. I was at it. kinda disappointed it closed.

Wow, you're right. It was 6/13/09... Seems like it's been longer. Then again, I haven't lived there for 5 years. Was always a perfect getaway when I didn't feel like going to class at Wayne State... That and the video arcade.
